This weekend we're hosting the next of a series of wine tastings a group of oeniphile friends does, and our theme is "Southern Wines"...that is, wines from the Southern Hemisphere. The last one we held was a Spanish wine tasting, so the food options to accompany the wine were a bit more obvious.
I plan to prepare a number of appetizers and small plates. I'm eyeing an Argentine stuffed beef dish for one, but beyond that I'd be very interested in suggestions! Let me know if you've got a dish that might hail from say Australia, New Zealand or South Africa. (or any other Southern Hemisphere spots!).
I'll be sure to post a recap of the tasting!

Pair prawn and green mussel dishes with Australian whites such as Yellow Tail.
Dorine--now the beef curry I may need to look into...green mussel, that's interesting!
Madame D your comments have my mouth watering.
Anything involving roast lamb, lamb shanks or cutlets would be close, I guess. Otherwise Green Lipped Mussels - although I dunno where the Green Lipped bit come from, they're just mussels down this way - I like 'em just steamed open, with a dash of coriander and chili sauce.
You could try hapuku, or its close relatives Sea Bass or Grouper (is there a difference? I wouldn't know). There is quite a nice recipe here:

And of course, we could argue all day with our cousins across the ditch about the true origin of pavlova, but lord knows what sort of wine you would serve with that...
