If anyone read my article about my kid's accusation that I'm a horder (which I'm NOT!) My Name is Kim, and I'm A Hoarder? by Kimberly Ripley you might get a kick out of the fact that tomorrow our family is holding a yard sale. And just to prove to them how much of a non-hoarder I really am, I have become positively relentless with what will actually go on sale.
I've come up with a half dozen large boxes filled with books, many pieces of furniture that took up residence in the basement, scooters, bicycles, bed frames, candles, knicknacks, and a giant tub full of etcetera. You name it...I've dug it up, and it's all being sold.
I have mixed emotions about yard sales. While I love to visit them, I hate to hold them, as I'm never sure what to charge and typically dislike rude hagglers. Haggling is fine. I've been known to haggle a good deal a time or two, but the last time we had a yard sale an elderly lady got in my face and told me everything I was selling was WAY overpriced.
"You can buy paperback books at the Salvation Army for ten cents," she said in a nasally, ear eroding pitch. "Yours are all marked for a quarter."
"Yes, they are," I smiled sweetly.
"They're too much!" she barked.
"Why don't you go on down to the Salvation Army then, and BUY THEIRS!"
I so hope this doesn't happen tomorrow.
I have a deal with my kids. Whatever DOESN'T sell tomorrow will get heaped into trash bags and boxes, and delivered to Goodwill or the Salvation Army....except for the paperback books.
I refuse to let that old bat from years back (if she's even still with us, the dear soul) get the best of me!

My sister-in-law wanted to experience this American phenomenon called "rummage sale". Of course when they got there, it reminded them right away of the open air markets back home so, they had fun finding their way thru the less daunting rituals and ways of a rummage sale! I can't wait to get a report of what they hauled home later tonight.

If you keep a list of what you donate and who you donate to from your sale leftovers, you can take it off your taxes. There are tax programs that actually calculate the value of specific items based on their condition so you don't have to guess how much they're worth.
Good luck with your sale!
Customer after I quoted the price: I only spent $30 in N. Carolina last night!
Me: Well, if you hurry back perhaps you can get the same room!
I feel the same way, Kimberly. I don't like to have yard sales either. And my family has accused me in the past of being a hoarder.
The thought of holding a yard sale makes me tired....as do some other things I may have mentioned lately, lol! Books at the Goodwill here are $4.00 for hardbacks, $2.00 for paperbacks now, and I think that is WAY overpriced.....the kids' books are somewhat cheaper.
Hope you'll do an article about Ebay!
Now I’m dropping by to see ya
