What is a Writer

I think that in the vision of a writer is the making of order our out of chaos. In this way, he is like a Michelangelo making a David out of what seems, at first, to be a slab of rock.
His mission is to guide the reader to transcend time, sense and mass, where mass is that kind of heaviness that sometimes pulls us down and makes us aware of the creeping ordinarinesses all round us. He does this by approaching your heart rather than your head.
As he writes, he tries to address many issues that are of great importance to us all.
These issues include feelings and emotions, needs and insights.
He knows that the reader wants from him an experience that will make the reader :
Think, wonder and even soar, wrestle with an issue, be inspired, be informed, have his concepts challenged, be taken on a journey that stimulates his inner emotions of laughter and tears, be comforted or challenged and perhaps even be healed.

If all this is true, and of that there can be no doubt, then we writers are true artists and we have invaluable roles to play in society. Let's all, whether bards or school essayists, be proud of our chosen missions.
