Situated on the North Yorkshire Moors, on the road to Whitby, The Hole of Horcum is a vast hollow, 400 feet deep, and measures 3/4 of a mile across. It was created by the natural erosion of springs, over thousands of years.

The beautiful colours change constantly with the light, and with the seasons.

There is another explaination of how the Hole came into being. Legend has it that while having an arguement with his wife, the Giant,Wade, picked up a lump of soil and threw it at his wife, Bell, leaving a huge hole in the ground.

It is said that you can still see his fingerprints in the soil if the light is right!

Which ever story you prefer, fighting giants or spring erosion, it is a stunning landmark on the moors!

Legend is quite good, given that fingerprinting began during the Victorian era. That's not to say the fingerprints aren't visible just that Legend was ahead of it's time.
Seeing fingertip prints might be at what Legend was suggesting and the modern tellers corrupted Legend into fingerprints.
