Waltz Upon The Water

He came each evening
to scatter rose petals on the water
The swan always seemed to be there -
it was a ritual of sorts
to watch him sprinkle the petals
with such care and concern

I watched from a distance
as I didn’t want to interrupt,
this evening dance of elegance
by the old man and the swan
who came each eve to dance
amongst the petals on the water

I wondered why they came each day
and why I was so drawn to them
what held us all together
in this waltz beside the water
Maybe I’ll never know the answer...
but I’ll be back tomorrow
