A lovely old Silver Maple has reigned on the corner in our neighborhood for at least three-quartes of a century! Her graceful canopy of leaves shaded us in summer. Those same delicate leaves turned pale yellow in fall. Her large rounded buds were a food source for squirrels in spring. And in winter, her slender bare branches were elegant, smooth and silvery gray. Majestic and splendid, she's been an important part of the skyline for as long as anyone can remember.
But her time has sadly come to the end, and today she had to come down. A team of city workers with buzzing chain saws supplied the manpower, and in an incredibly short time, this once magnificent tree was just a pile of logs, branches and leaves! Then that was gone, too, and all that remained was her stump ...
I must admit to being in awe of this crew of men. The tree came down seemingly effortlessly, in exactly the right spot, missing other trees, sidewalks, yards, streetlights and cars. It was truly an awesome sight!
The empty space where she proudly stood just this morning is vast and enormous. There's no way a tree will ever grow to replace her in the remainder of my lifetime.

"I think that I shall never see
A poem lovely as a tree
Poems are made by fools like me,
But only God can make a tree.”
~Joyce Kilmer
