M is for mushrooms

and squishy soft green moss,

moss that can found at the base of a tree

or growing like hair on an old tree limb.

M is for a machine that pumps

and another that vacuums the cranberries.

"Now I would say that's a Monster Machine!"
M is for Mud, don't get it on your shoes

and for maps we make when we return to school.

M is for Miss Mary Mack, a girl that's dressed in black, black, black,

a song we love to sing and clap just before our afternoon snack.

Miss Mary Mack Clapping Game
Two friends can clap and chant together almost anywhere.
In the following rhyme, the clapping pattern is --
1. Clap own hands together
2. Cross arms in front of chest
3. Clap own hands together
4. Clap hands with partner three times
Miss Mary Mack, Mack, Mack,
All dressed in black, black, black,
With silver buttons, buttons, buttons,
All down her back, back, back
She asked her mother, mother, mother,
For fifty cents, cents, cents,
To see the elephant, elephant, elephant.
Jump over the fence, fence, fence.
He jumped so high, high, high,
He reached the sky, sky, sky,
And he never came back, back, back,
‘Till the end of July, ‘ly, ‘ly.

Even though we went on our "walkabout" we had to get in our phonics lesson. Must not forget "No Child Left Behind" mandate.
The thing about "good teaching" is the ability to "scrap planned lesson plans" on the spur of the moment and come up with new plans on a minute's notice. When I wrote my plan book over the week-end, I had no idea we were going on a walkabout on Tuesday...but once I saw the bogs flooded, I knew an adventure was at hand. So why not do the phonics lesson of the day out on the field trip.
I'm going to have to look up ALL those big M words....you know I only teach kindergarten...you are really trying to stretch my vocabulary as well as my mind.
What a great class you have and those photos - wonderful! Keep the teaching the way it is, on your end, we sure need more like you. You are Marvelous!

Nice "M" walk, I think that may be a monster machine too!
Your class has so much fun, I hope someone like you runs the activity sessions if I'm to wind up in a retirement home!
