Dogs and cats commonly eat things that they shouldn't. The problem is that many items can't be digested or pass through the intestine causing a "Foreign Body". An indigestible object can become lodged in the stomach or intestines that may require surgery to remove. Untreated, ingestion of these types of items can be fatal.

Veterinary Pet Insurance (VPI), the nation's oldest and largest provider of pet health insurance, complied a list of most common items surgically removed from pets.

Do you know what is #1? It is the sock. This is most common in the dog. I'll tell you more about cats in a second.

Here is the list:

Top 10 Surgically Removed Items From Pets

1. Socks
2. Underwear
3. Panty Hose
4. Rocks
5. Balls
6. Chew Toys
7. Corn Cobs
8. Bones
9. Hair Ties/Ribbons
10. Sticks

In my experience, the most common items surgically removed from cats are ribbon, string, tread, baby bottle nipples, and toys.

You know the knotted pieces of "rope" that are made as chew toys for dogs?? I once assisted in the removal of an enormous one from a medium sized dog. Add to that, pantyhose (same dog, two separate occasions) raquetballs, tennis balls, golf balls, lead sinkers, light bulbs, beer cans, and flip flops.

As for cats... toy mice, silk flowers, the plastic rings from around the cap of the milk jug... and dental floss is a really bad one...

animals are sneaky and sometimes eat what ever they feel like, Can't watch them all the time..maybe putting the in a clear glass cage would work..

Hubby told me once to make sure to throw away dental floss correctly. If you leave it dangling from a wastebasket and your pet gets ahold of it, this can get wrapped around the intestine, as well!!!
