Why did Pelosi torpedo the rescue plan?

She knew that the agreement was hanging by its fingernails.  The Republican leadership had just enough votes.  So she makes a highly partisan speech just before the vote, pissing off enough people to kill the bill.She had to know exactly what she was doing.

Do you mean to suggest that Republicans voted against the interest of the country because they were miffed? That's all right in your book?

Though agree with your primary reason I hae to think past her words. If those who voted against it allowed a contrary remark or even go as far as to say their feelings were hurt it shines a profound light on our leadership. It tells me that their personal and or political feelings supercedes the "needs" of the country. After constantly saying how dire the situation remains yet they could vote against the bill because of a politcal glitch. It lets me know how far down on the totum pole the American people actually are to them.
So service to their constituents includes basing their vote on hurt feelings? Hmm...I'd be seriously thinking about voting for someone else in November if I though my congressional representative acted that way.

Regardless of how offensive Pelosi's remarks may have been they have a responsibility to vote on the merits of the bill.

I agree with Charles Hussein, Spencer, and Nippy. If I thought my representatives did that, they'd get a no vote from me, in the next election, and I'd let them know why.

It also suggests to me that Ms. Pelosi knows that the financial crisis is working for the Democrats and is much more interested in scoring political points than solving the problem.

Many of the Republicans were getting phone calls and emails from their constituents against the bill. They were supporting the views of the people that elected them.

Those who didn't vote for the package, including the Democrats, were reacting to the phone calls and emails they received from their districts. They are afraid of losing their jobs. Plus, the package that went to the floor again did not protect those facing foreclosure. It protects the banks who made the loans.

There are some Republicans who are saying the speech is what did it but that's not the truth. Not that Pelosi gets a free pass here ; it was incredibly stupid to make a partisan speech right before the vote was taken but there is no way that those voting against it did so because of hurt feelings.

They're politicians. They have no feelings.

Somehow, I doubt the reason the Republicans who voted against it voted against it because it didn't protect those facing foreclosure. In fact, a friend of mine who shines linoleum at the Capitol reported overhearing a conversation between a Democratic representative and a Republican. The Democrat expressed concern for those duped by predatory lending practices who had not realized what the fine print said.

If people were gong to vote for the bill, they should vote for it. Blaming it on Pelosi's words is disingenuous.

I called and emailed all of my national elected officials, both republicans and democrats letting them know I was against the bill as it was initially written Friday and encouraged them not to vote for it as it was. After the vote today and seeing a republican representative on national news bitching that Nancy Pelosi had miffed them in her speach prior to the vote let me know (confirming) there were some sad uncaring elected officials in our congress. To vote against such a bill in this dire credit crisis we are in because of a political speach is empty headed and shows again the lame mentality some have. I thought, evidently erroneously, that they were suppose to be there on our (the people) behalf.
When I mentioned he hurt feelings thing to my wife she said: "But they're politicians. They don't have feelings."
