Have you ever wanted to create a mood in a piece of writing, but the words just sounded cliched, old or tired? I am having this trouble myself. I hope maybe by posting this someone will have an answer to how to do this effectively.
If I am wanting to exhibit anger in a piece of writing, I could use a sunset in all of its violent colors of red, orange, and yellow. Sort of a flame description, or a reference to heat.
What else can be used to exhibit mood?

what i do when i find myself at a stand still , is i read work that inspires me . Say , if I want to use symbols and metaphors to expose heavy emotions I read 19th century french poetry , if I am looking for some drama I read some Russian classics and so on…
As far as an angry mood , I would look into Toni Morrison for some inspiration , some classic greek tragedies etc. Sorry I couldn’t help more , but that’s just my experience , we learn and get inspired by the great writers ….
Mood writing or using metaphors. Showing what would normally be beautiful to everyone else is described as dark, haunting, ugly. A busy downtown intersection. A burnt forest. A spider approaching a trapped fly. Dogs ripping a cat apart. Gawd, that's even too groutesque for me!
