After reading this book, our class decided that they too would like to have "color days". Although 99% of the children can identify all their colors when they enter kindergarten, having color days can encourage a"sense of community" in the classroom. Children are encouraged to either wear the "color of the day" or bring in an object of that color.
On red day...

in reading, we matched white alphabet tiles with an alphabet strip.

In math, we built structures with cusenaire rods.

On Blue Day....

in reading, we listened to beginning sounds in pictures

and matched beginning sounds with letters.

On yellow day.....

in art, we made platypuses because we had read the story Plaidypus Lost.

In math, we graphed pattern blocks.

And then we went outside and did a "Challenge Walk".

On Green day...

we sorted Teddy Grahams in math.

And on Orange Day...

we made sets #1-#5 with snap cubes and recorded our results.

"Hey, do you see me?"
On Purple Day....

we created patterns with tiles

and with learning links

and sorted shapes.

And on "Plaid Day" we had fun.

"Is that a plaid skirt?"

Our color days were a success...I think everyone enjoyed them. It was "a community builder" and I think it worked!

Any time you feel like "helping out in a kindergarten class" just drive on down. You are only an hour north of us. Of course, we would put you to work. There are no slackers in this room! Lol
My son (in kindergarten) keeps mixing up red and green, although it has gotten better. The strangest thing is that he used to mix up red and green in Danish as well. Do you have any advice?
I think your classroom is much more fun that my kindergaten days ever were.....

When children are exposed to developmentally appropriate learning tools, they are more then engaged with their learning. Young children are by their very nature curious about how things work. So many math concepts can be taught with learning links, pattern blocks, snap cubes, cusenaire rods, geoboards, and unifix cubes.
Anytime you are in Massachusetts, stop by and pretend you are in kindergarten. I won't tell.
Feel free to use any of these pictures for your watercolor illustrations for your book. I loved the illustrations you have done already for "Marmalade".
I love it, Melinda. One of my little girls in class has a father who works from home and has the major childcare responsibilities and Kara said, "My Dad just doesn't understand. I told him it was orange day and what does he put out for me to wear but pink clothes. I told him it was ORANGE day and he said "I forgot to do the wash." I just chuckled.
This whole series is a wonderful reference for parents and an invaluable resource for other teachers. It might be helpful, at the bottom of the article, to have links to the previous photo-essays in this series so that interested readers can easily navigate to them.
you rock... Blessings always...

They certainly do love color days.
I have seen pictures of those children in uniforms in National Geographic.
I too wore a uniform when I went to Sacred Heart. Blue garbadine jumper, white shirt with balloon sleeves, navy knee socks, black and white saddle shoes. In the winter, a blue blazer. I hated my uniform.
I have 40 years of experience to pull from! Lol
Oh, and Congrats on your win, too! ; )

The world is a rainbow
That's filled with many colors
Yellow, black, and white, and brown
You see them all around
The world is a rainbow
With many kinds of people
It takes all kinds of people
To make the world go round
Now you be you
And I'll be me
That's the way we were meant to be
But the world is a mixing cup
Just look what happens when you stir it up
The world is a rainbow
with many kinds of people
and when we work together
It's such a sight to see
The world is beautiful when we live in harmony
Now you be you
And I'll be me
That's the way we were meant to be
But the world is a mixing cup
Just look what happens when you stir it up
The world is a rainbow
with many kinds of people
And when we work together
Its such a sight to see
The world is beautiful
When we live in harmony
I know that song well and each year teach it to my wee ones. At the end of the year we sing it as the finale to our Mother Earth Day Literary Concert. We have great hand and body movements to go along with the lyrics.
When you stop by kindergarten someday, I'll make sure "a challenge walk" is on the agenda.
