I got an email asking me what I knew about the someone cheating on the "Summer Pics Promo." I told her I knew nothing about it, but did this happen and if so, what?
I can't believe someone would cheat. I remember the Mother's Day fisasco of a couple of years ago where people where rating beautiful babies 1's.
What a sick-o bunch.

some people hate to loose.
IT was not two separate promos as some have said; it was advertised as post your pics promo for 10 points apiece , and the top 10 photos that had the most10's were put into a drawing for the camera. if you had one of the top rated pic's, you were selected. And you could post as many photos as you wanted, old or new. This was all clarified by the gather staff on the promo article they posted. And even if you had ratings of 1's on a pic if that pic also had the most 10's you were selected.
Some people thought it was not fair that people self promoted themselves which has always been allowed on ather, and some believe this is a form of cheating but to gather staff it is not cheating.
But there are a lot of members who believe if you advertised by mass emailing or posted articles asking people to look that this was a form of cheating, but gather staff disagree with this premise.
Ah Janet you had that at your fair too? That is why I dont exhibit at the fair.
Then, as has been mentioned, some people didn't realize that Gather had encouraged people to recycle previously posted stuff.
Think about it. The prize in the contest was a moderately priced camera. I would have been happy to win it but I certainly wouldn't have spent 4 hours a day posting pictures. I just didn't think it was worth that much effort.
I worked for many years as a programmer in the corporate office of a retail chain. I got to know the head of loss prevention fairly well. One thing I learned from him is the amazing lengths people who worked in the stores would go to in order to win small prizes in sales contests. Some of them got fired by cheating to win prizes worth $50 or so. People are funny.
I find it hard to believe.
Probably. Starting with DRIVE-BY 1's for ratings. Just like in real life, and WAY BEFORE THE INTERNETS somebody, somewhere, somehow, is going to figure out a way to game the system. In a number of comments above you can see how this contest was gamed. The only way to circumvent this kind of "cheating" is to have an impartial source judge content that will then be placed online. There are sites for that. But there is no overarching authority on gather that judges content. People can delete their content or comments on their content. But that is also a way of gaming the system.
Take a looking at this page on SPOOFING, this on IDENTITY THEFT, and this on GAMING THE SYSTEM.
And back to "real life", we have SCAMS, and the Boston-originated PONZI SCHEME.
And if you want to see more of THE BIG PICTURE and Ponzi Schemes in today's news, then read this CASH CRISIS CHRONOLOGY.
I did wonder one thing. Were pictures allowed to be doctored on photo programs? I'm assuming they were since no one mentioned that possibility as the cheating.
I hope you have a happy Spring!
