Just to preface this with the fact that I'm not a poet in any way shape or form. I wrote this from the heart for my only daughter who will be 18 soon and possibly leaving the nest.
O' child of mine
I still wish you were nine
For life was so easy
You were much more breezy.
Our turbulent days
Are flashing by in a haze
You're almost grown
You hate that you are my clone.
I know you detest
Those qualities you possess
That remind you of me
On that we can agree.
O' child of mine
You are my firstborn
I know you are torn.
Do the best that you can
Always have a plan.
Know my heart aches
You will make your mistakes.
Know in your heart
When we are apart
My love will always be there
Do not despair.
You will always be my sunshine.

Well, you are most certainly wrong about that!!!
This was really beautiful, Dani.................
I sure wish you'd write more non-poems *you are too a poet!*, so there!, and keep posting them. I know how you feel though we have a son, older too and they do make their very own mistakes - somethings we'd never have thought of in a million years. I told my Dad once, about our son, "He won't learn from your mistakes, from our mistakes, but from his own mistakes and no matter how painful it can be, that's just the way life works."
My husband calls me sunshine, well, not really lately (don't even ask! lol) but that's his nickname for me.
