This year for Halloween I've decided to think up some creative homemade costumes. Most years I do store bought (or a mix and match of store bought). Things are a bit tight and I can't see forking over a whole bunch of money on something they are just going to wear one night to a church parking lot "Trunk and Treat" (about 50 church member's cars with the trunks up and decorated with themes and passing out candy to kids.... I like that it's a safe place to take the kids) and to trick or treat family. If I only had one child it wouldn't be a big deal but most years I end up spending at least $100-125 for my five kids!
I have five kids and I like to do something different each year. Can you give me some cheap ideas on things I could make for costumes? I have a 12 yr old boy, 11 yr old boy, 7 year old girl, 5 yr old boy and 3 yr old boy.
I don't do gory or violent costumes. I like cute, neat, inventive and creative themes.

I wrote this recently on this subject, if you're collecting ideas: Nine Low-to-No Budget Halloween Costumes Anyone Can Make. GL!
Heidi that is a really neat idea... but we drive so that costume might be kind of hard to do! lol
My son is in football so last year his was cheap... he went in his football jersey, lol.
My now 11 yr old went at 9 yrs old as a nerd... we went to Goodwill and got him a briefcase, nerdy glasses, suspenders with too short of pants and the whole getup.... the homemade ones can be way cuter than store bought!
My oldest son's first halloween I bought a white sweatshirt and white sweatpants and bought some black felt that I sewed on to make spots. He was a dalmation. I took some white material and made a tail with some stuffing inside to make it stiff. I took some elastic and sewed it the circumferance of his head and made two ears out of white material with black spots on it. I put one white sock and one black sock on him. He was adorable and stayed warm too!
My oldest was a hobo a couple years ago which was easy because I just used a brown eyebrow pencil to make "stubble" and he wore a stocking cap and old dingy torn shirt and pants with his dad's boots on. He ended up making his own treat bag my tying a pillowcase on a stick and holding it over his shoulder to add to the effect!
Just added a couple suggestions for anyone else wanting ideas. I never like to do the same thing twice. :)

My daughter dressed as a hebrew woman once too. You can use many different kinds of materials to make a robe and the headcovering and use a soft rope for the tie.
