After getting pictures of some of what they found, we came back in to the house and got out the Children's Guide to Insects and Spiders (pictured below). Little did Jasmine know their bug hunting would turn into yet another science lesson, but that is the best way to do them, with something that interests them.
We didn't have any luck really trying to identify what they found, especially the spiders, but along the way they looked at, read about, and learned about other bugs.
Hard to see, but there were 2 bees and 3 little butterflies in these flowers.

Close-up of a furry caterpillar.

Another caterpillar...I thought this one was a great shot. The next day it was gone, along with the other 2 that were there. Jasmine assumes spiders ate them overnight.

Wicked looking spider out off the front porch.

Jasmine said this cicada was newly hatched because it's wings were still wet.

I can't believe I put the camera close enough to get the picture of this spider!

I call these garden spiders, I don't know their name. Unfortunately our insect and spider book is drawings, not the real things so it's so hard to tell what is what on the spiders.

The book we used. We have used this book a lot in our years of home schooling, it was a great investment.

I think the yellow spider is called an Orb spider. We usually call them banana spiders at our house.

I was always big into insects and spiders as a kid. In fact, I still kinda like them ;)
