It sickens me to write about this. But people need to know. It happened at a so-called Christian college---George Fox University in Newberg, Oregon (20 miles southwest of Portland). Early Tuesday morning (September 23), an effigy in the likeness of Senator Barack Obama was found hanging from a tree in front of one of the school buildings. It disgusts me that not only is something like this still happening in this day and age, but the fact that it happened at a Christian college saddens me even more.
Here's the article from Oregon Live:
A likeness of U.S. Sen. Barack Obama was found hanging in the George Fox University quad early Tuesday along with graffiti aimed at minority recipients of a scholarship program, the university president told The Oregonian this morning.
President Robin Baker discussed the incident this morning during the twice-weekly campus service, which was packed. With dozens of Act 6 students and student leaders in front of the stage, he denounced the display and urged students to show that such a display has no place in Christian ideals.
"We absolutely cannot hate those around us and say we love God," he said. "It is not possible."
"Yesterday was not a good example of what it means to follow Jesus," he said.
Quoting the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and Abraham Lincoln, the president said the university has long had difficulties recruiting nonwhite students and his dream has been to help create a university that "more broadly represents the kingdom of God."

And some of you may be aware that somebody here on Gather posted a photoshopped picture portraying Barack Obama as a shoeshine boy shining Sarah Palin's shoes. I and a lot of other people pointed out the disgusting, racist nature of such a picture, and luckily some apparently also flagged the article, so now it doesn't show in the public lists and feeds. That this kind of thing keeps popping up all over the place is a sure sign that we have a long way to go before the problemn of racism in the country is resolved.
Wonder if some attitudes are going to change after President Obama is in office and makes our country better?
But then again they will probably just give Bush credit for any accomplishments that Obama has.
Clinton is blamed for Bush's failures.
Sadly, something like this can happen anywhere. What saddens me most, as a Quaker, is that this happened at a Quaker institution.
As a matter of response to God's leading, spiritual responsibility, and scriptual teaching, Quakers have been active members (and at time leaders) of the movements for racial equality, justice, education, relief work (including anti-poverty programs and natural disaster relief), immigration reform and peace. George Fox University has a history of sending student groups to participate in these activities around the world as part of their college experience and training.
Effigys are not part of Quaker tradition. Hate is not part of Quaker tradition.
May the students involved search their souls and remove the destructive motives behind this action.
Just joking, no really...I am just joking. I HAVE a Dubya doll, but it's been in the freezer for 6 years.
Sandy thinks I "stalk" her, but we appear to post under the same political posts. However, when I read her remarks, I just can't help but to respond.
This one, Sandy is disgusting! Now I truly understand your paradigm.
This is not acceptable - anywhere - anytime. Sounds more like the KKK disguising themselves as Christians - no other explanation.
