I want to do something good for an animal this Christmas

What a great thing to do and such a good example to set for your daughter. My local SPCA just sent out bulletins stating that they needed donations (of any amount). Also, used or new towels, sheets, pet food and pet feeding bowls. I'm sure if you called your local shelter they could give you a comprehensive list of needs. Let your daughter help you collect the items and drop them off. I think it is an admirable thing you're doing.

What a wonderful thing to do, J W! Our local shelter charges $80 for a cat, $40 for a rabbit, and $300 more or less for a dog. Outrageous! They refuse to bring down the prices, then complain they have too many animals! You could call the director of the shelter and tell him/her what you'd like to do - or mention it to one of the shelter workers.

Many shelters have a list of things they need(like Clorox, pets toys, trash bags, etc.) A call to whatever shelter you choose would narrow down the list(then let you stock up on the products that they need when they're on sale). I use coupons and combine them with store sales to get stuff for the shelter where I got my cat(www.siameserescue.org) and periodically take them a whole bunch of stuff I've collected.

Check with your shelter, before you buy the food too. they may have something specific they have to use. I am sure they can tell you the best thing to do as well.
As far as your daughter, help her come up with ideas to raise money to help. You might find she has some good ideas.

Some shelters the adoption fee is only $20! This is a great thing you are going to do~

We do foster care for the local Humane Society. We take in abandoned kittens and puppies and socialize them until they are ready to be nuetered and then put up for adoption. The socialization process makes them respnd positively to humans and other pets in the home which makes them more adoptable.

All shelters have needs so call them and see what it is that they need. They can always use money and pet food. You can also volunteer time for animal care at the shelter. If you love animals and are not allowed to have them in your home this would be a great way to spend time with them. Good luck with you plan.

This is such a great thing to do! When Elliott gets old enough, we're going to volunteer at a humane society, if we have one close enough by to where ever we are stationed. I believe that they have to be at least 6 (at least I know that's what it is at the one in Minot) before they can volunteer, but even if we have another child by then, Elliott and I will volunteer while my husband stays home with any potential younger child. :)

If the shelter you are going to donate to has a website, I would check it out and see if they have any fundraisers coming up. Ours has a few each year. Last year we had pictures taken there with our pets.

You can volunteer to walk the dogs and stuff like that. The animal shelter near me is only open certain times of the week but there is always somebody there taking care of the animals.

Such a sweet idea on your behalf, J.W.!!!!! Animal shelters are always in need of blankets, especially now that the cold weather is coming! Maybe your daughter would like to donate one of her blankets to the shelter!

I was going to suggest what others have already done - calling the shelter and asking what they need, etc.

I don't have any ideas for you, but wanted to say this is a great thing to do!

My friend rescues Golden Retrievers and finds them loving homes. He is a legitimate rescuer. That is a nice thing to do.

Here's something that probably won't happen, but I think it's a good idea. In your description of yourself, you describe yourself as a Christian. Go to your man or woman of the cloth and challenge him or her to give a sermon using teachings from the New Testament as to why many in the congregation should adopt some pets (A lifetime of pet commitment of course!) at the local shelter. A Precher worth his or her bread could actually get them all adopted. I'm thinking of approaching one myself, as a matter of fact. I'm thinking of approaching the one with if not the largest congregation, the one with the priest, nun or minister that has felt that their sermons have been rather dull lately. Good luck on your potential good deed. I should mention a Rabbi or others of various cloths, but that sort of thing might or might not be in their game. No Insults Intended.
