The Fall Equinox is being observed this weekend at Cahokia Mounds State Historic Site in Collinsville, Illinois. The event is being held at Woodhenge, a reconstructed artifact believed to be a prehistoric observatory consisting of a circle of wooden posts surrounding a central post. Woodheng is located just west of Monks Mound, the largest of the Cahokian mounds where the city's rule, the Great Sun, lived. It's now called Monk's Mound because a small church was built on on of the lower of the three terraces.
Visitors who attend the equinox sunrise event should arrive by 6:30 am. An archaeologist will explain the dicovery of the woodhenges, how they work, and what we know about them as well as the Mississippian culture that built Cahokia and these monuments.
Out of respect for American Indians and their beliefs, no rituals or ceremonies will be permitted.
