Queen of La La Land Update if Anyone Cares. Help!

I'm here, but still hurting.  Having whined now, I have an open wound from surgery that is the size of a quarter.  I have to keep it covered with gauze, and when I take the gauze off it rips the skin and bleeds.  The doctor says that that's the healing process.  I say that hurts.

I can't put anything on it besides dry gauze.  Has anyone else heard of this?  Is my doctor nuts, or am I?

The pain of the wound is going on five weeks, now.  I haven't been on Gather much, and hate to whine but I'm getting desperate.

Thanks if anyone can help.  A hug will do.

I wish I could help, I really do.
But, I don't what to do about your wound.

Doctors aren't always right and don't know everything. Been there...done that with a few of them. I say put a slight film (not gobs) of petroleum jelly over the wound before you put the gauze on, which helps prevent the dressing from sticking and tearing things open. How the heck does he expect it to heal if it keeps getting torn open? Trust me, I had a much larger boo boo on my nub. Worked great for me!

I had an absess that had to be treated the same way. Basically they Dr said that the wound had to heal from the inside out. I actually had to take a cotton swab every day and sort of rip the wound open on the outside. He said that if the outside healed before the inside that the absess would come back. I feel your pain. It was excruciating to have to rip the wound every day. Sometimes it hurt so bad my husband had to do it for me!

That is strange. My mom had an absess like what Dusty describes, on her ankle, that had to heal that way. However, each day we had to wash the wound in saline, and keep it moist. I am so sorry for your pain and I hope it passes quickly. Feel better {{HUGS}}

I have a lot of trust in doctors. Sometimes they don't explain what is happening and what to expect. Now that I know what to expect from my leg I get along a lot better. Have tow that are in the process of healing and he says will take a while since he had to cut through 4 inches of muscle. I'll do as he says. Dont want to end up with a nub like Rob. Came close and the bear is not out of the woods yet.

What you get from me is sympathy and a big hug.

Most docs I know are recommending neosporin (or something like it) on the wound, then bandaged, to speed healing of the skin. Yours may have a reason for "dry", though.

While that doesn't absolutely keep the gauze from sticking, it significantly lessens it.

I hope it heals soon! I'm sorry for your pain, but I think the doctor knows his stuff! I wouldn't do anything other than what he instructs b/c it could cause lots of damage! As long as it is not seeping anything other than blood (and I think clear is okay too) then it definitely healing.

I posted this right as Debra posted her comment . . . Don't use Neosporin or any antibiotic ointment unless you talk to the doctor first!!! Dry definitely is best. I unfortunately know from experience (knee surgery) . . . I used Neo. and now have a huge unsightly scar! If you just let it heal naturally, then it'll eventually get smaller. Sometimes doctors have a burn cream made out of potato skins that helps ease the pain . . . Mederma is also great for scars too!

I beleive the technique is sometiems called wet to dry dressing. I'm active on a plastic surgery board & many people have to do this.

I hope you get to feeling better. I have having to use a gauze. I had to once also. I burt my arm at work. I fell down on the grill in 2001. It wasn't that bad. I am glad it was my arm and not my face.It was only a 3rd degree burn but I still had to go have it taken care of by putting it in a whirlpool for a while.

Talk to your Doctor before you use anything. Just get better real soon there is a HUG just for you.

Do NOT put anything on it until you talk to your doctor. For sure not vaseline and not even neosporin either. Talk to your doctor about the pain. I really think he knows best for you. If you trusted him to operate then trust him now about treatment of the wound. An open wound that heals over without healing up will truly be more painful than anything you are going through now.

Be sensible and keep yourself out of trouble. Huggs and a nice warm cuppa tea. ;o)

Sometimes a dry dressing is needed to debride the wound, that is, to remove dead tissue or something else which needs to be removed. If it still needs the dry dressings, ask you doctor if it's OK to drip some hydrogen peroxide on the gauze to loosen it before you pull it off.

A second opinion never hurt. I wouldn't use neosporin though. I know of several incidences where problems were only exacerbated by using it. Some people are also even allergic to it. Perhaps before you take it off you can dampen it with saline solution.
