In my quest to help cover what we want to get for the kids for Christmas, I've got a goal of getting up to 25,000 points by the end of October. Now, originally, before the Summerpics promo, my goal was more modest. However, the summerpics promo was so helpful, I blew past my goal with ease.
Currently, I have 22,196 points, leaving me with 2,813 left to get, roughly. My plan is to cash out towards Halloween, so that I can get the gift cards before Black Friday for Target.
I don't know what all I plan to get yet, but that'll give me about $125 to spend on each of the kids, leaving me with left over money for tax, and gift wrap.
Hopefully, if the sales are decent, I won't need to spend any money out of pocket for Christmas this year. I do already have a few small things- some clothing for Raegan, a plug and play game for Chris, a book of posters for Gilly, plus some other small odds and ends.
I think if I concentrate on just doing their stockings between now and then, I'll be set!

As Karen said, with 3 kids, I tend to plan early for Christmas. I like to try and get the money "spent" before spending it, so that I can stick to a budget and a plan. The years when I don't, are the years where I feel like I didn't get the kids things they wanted, or wound up with a bunch of small cheap junk that falls apart.
Last year, we made the decision to get the kids each 1 expensive thing- in this case, a DS for each of the older two, and a Leapster for Gilly. That kept us from over spending, AND they each got something they've used quite a bit.
Oh- as for cash.. well, if I know ahead of time that there are some really good sales somewhere else, I may split the money half and half between paypal and target. But, at this point, I'm just planning to do it all in one fell swoop.
Besides, for me, if I got the paypal, I'd end up spending it on bills, or something. I tend to treat gift cards far differently than cash.
I'll come by and comment as much as I can to help you achieve your goals. :)

another!
Before, if she got one, I did the picking for her, so we wouldn't spend 5 hours in a toy aisle. Now she's got very definitive ideas on just what she wants, so she spends them herself!
