I was in 4th grade & my teacher, Mrs. Hoff told me I should be a writer & I scored a 4.0 (the only 1 in the grade) on the writing portion of the Benchmark tests and that was the beginning....
I have always enjoyed writing...even at a very young age I would write out stories, although short...they were the beginning of a journey that has led me to my first published novel, A headstone for Nellie> Amazon.com, Barnes and Noble.com, penname, Virginia Swem Edmonds.
I was 8 years old. I was sitting in the teacher's lounge at school, where my mom was in charge of the CCD classes. I got hit with the sudden realization that I could try to create stories like the ones I always had my nose buried in! I wrote a poem called "The Dove" on the chalkboard. I still have a copy of it somewhere.
I guess I did much of the same when I was younger. Thirty years ago I started to write and because of a lot of reasons I had to put it on the back burner. Four years ago I started to write again and I haven't been able to stop. My husband says, "I'm obsessed." I love it, as I'm sure most of you do. Jenni, did you self publish? I was in my Grandmother's room reading her a story that I wrote. My Grandad was there telling me that the spelling and the words didn't make sence. So I re-wrote the story. After I re-wrote the story I wrote another one. After a while my Grandfather was telling me I should write a story and he told me what the story should be about and that's how it began.
I actually came to it kind of late. I was a reader, an avid reader. Then I guess it was last year or so I actually started narrating my first novel in my head and here I am.
I've decided to not write for a living but I thought I would from Junior High on. I was told by all my English teachers I had a gift. Guess I lost it along the way somewhere.
I've been writing since I was seven. There are times whan the urge is so strong that I just have to, it puts me in the zone. I look at the words later and wonder where they came from. Getting published was never on my priority list - writing is. I always thought that once I was old - 60s and 70s - that would be a good time to write articles-like a column, short stories, books on different subjects - fiction and non-fiction. Funny - I'm almost 60 and I am starting to write more, so who knows - everything is possible:)
i was 8, thats when i wrote my first poem in the long past year of 1992. i always wanted to be remembered for my words, then read the poetry of Jim Morrison and i was dead set on writing. and now its all i do day in and day out
I was a writer before I could write. As a child I made up stories and told them to my grandma. I didn't think I was writing , but now I see that i was just without a pen. The career choice came in the sixth grade when one of my teachers actually discovered that I had talent.
I was sitting in front of a microphone in elementary school and the principal was telling me if I wouldn't learn to write she would have to record all my stories on tape.
Basically when I would get bored in school, it would encourage me to doodle stars or write- and even when I had a hard time emotionally, I'd just pick up a notebook or type away a letter for pen paling or write a poem of poetry to express my feelings. It helped relieve the pain I was struggling and going through- when no one would listen or understand or would simply, judge or blow things out of proportion. Instead, a notebook could never twist my words or how I felt, nor judge what I felt.
