I Think I Figured Out What John McCain Is Reforming Against

McCain is continually reforming what he stands for. In so doing he is a master magician but hardly a prospective commander in chief.

Certainly, Lori, this says a lot about his character when looked at from this perspective. Of course, we don't know the details. It could very well have been that the marriage was on the rocks before the accident. I will say that McCain is a survivor in every aspect. Survivors are often opportunists. Even though I can give him benefit of doubt because I don't know the details of the relationship with his former wife before the accident, it would appear that his actions do comply with that survivor instinct that can be selfish. One of the reasons I don't like him is because I see him as self-centered and politically motivated to his own ends.

Well, thanks for this. I knew there was another Mrs. McCain but hadn't heard anything about her. I had heard when he was running the first time that he'd left his first wife for Cindy. Some men just can't live without that trophy. (Good thing my husband doesn't think like that).

You know, Lori, one of the things I do sometimes is imagine private conversations between candidate spouses. I've done some scenarios in my mind with the Clintons and the Obamas too.

With McCain, I've often thought of how he might have proposed to Cindy saying something like, "If you marry me, I'll make you first lady someday."

I've also done some with George and Laura too. I should write some of them out because I think some might have some real validity, and they're sort of entertaining.

Yeah, that is a sad story and it says a lot about the man. But it says a helluva lot about the first wife. At the end of the piece, she doesn't trash him. Amazing.

I guess anyone can say anything about a person. But, I would think that if any of us had gone through what John McCain had gone through for five and half years in a POW camp, most of us would have been changed as well. I can't imagine losing those years out of my life in horrendous conditions such as that and then returning to the same life as before. I had uncles in WWII who were changed by the war and they weren't in a POW camp either. Their lives changed.

I also would like to add this to my comment above. If people who supposedly care about other people such as those who need to have health insurance, food stamps, welfare, then how can they be so mean to others who have struggled in their lives who are Republicans? I don't get it. It's not logical.

I can agree with some of what you said Barbara. War changes people. No doubt. I don't like McCain because of his policies - not because of his war service. On the contrary; I have a lot of respect for his service. As far as his divorce, well, who knows what went on in that house. Having been through one, they ain't easy and they ain't always clear...

That's what's called liberal logic, Barbara. Being so religiously consistent in their inconsistencies, their thinking is very logical, if only to themselves.

Its easy to make fun of "liberals" as you put it and I realize that McCain went through a lot but what about his 1st wife...almost being killed in a car accident then this then her hubby leaves her but I am sure they just grew apart right Sue...nothing to do with the fact that she was horribly disfigured and Cindy is hot.

Then he elects a not qualified VP...and you can argue 7 ways to Sunday with me but we all know Palin doesnt have what it takes to be President.

No, Lori. That was unfair of me. I just said that to bait you. I actually agree with much of what you said.

I suppose it's hard to ignore the possibilities of McCain tomcat-ing around on his first wife. I suppose it's hard to ignore the possibilities of McCain leaving her because she wasn't physically the same person he married and left and dreamed about for 5 years as a POW.

But... I suppose if we're not going to ignore those possibilities, we should also not ignore the possibilities that BOTH John McCain and Carol McCain were different people after undergoing the traumas that they endured in the other's absence.

While being a POW for 5 years will probably change a person, I think being in a near-fatal, disfiguring car accident would also change a person. You just cannot be the same if you come within Death's reach and survive.

I suppose it's hard to ignore the possibilities of them both changing to the point that they couldn't make their marriage work.

That, of course, would not excuse him cheating on her - if that is true.

Now THAT shows 'family values' that you'd get your jollies in the warm, ever so romantic ambience of the floors in a public men's room instead of at home.

Newt Gingrich was a deadbeat dad who abandoned his first wife and two young daughters. He left them without enough money to cover food or to the electric bill and was cheating on his second wife with a federally-paid congressional aide. BUT . . . He VALUED them for a while. AND considered them family.

So it all makes perfect sense . . .umm . . . to the senseless. :P

Neither of you make any sense. But, it's obvious neither of you were trying to make honest, sensible points. That might be what delusional people call 'liberal logic' in their backhanded, dishonest attempts to make 'liberal' a dirty word. The truth, as both of you know and choose to distort, is that liberals do not "use" family values and duplicity in their honest efforts to protect everything for everyone - even those of you who pretend you don't want it but surely breathe a sigh of relief every time we cover your sorry asses. I doubt anyone cares that John McCain was a total ass to his first wife nearly as much as they care that he is a slimy, lying, hypocrite.

The reasons for divorce are extremely complex, and one silly email doesn't begin to touch on the reasons. With a shattered pelvis, was she able to have children? Did McCain want children but did his 'Nam stint and intend to come home and have them? How about Carol? Such an accident changes a person. Vietnam changed people. Were these the same 2 people who married before Vietnam and a devastating car accident?
To suggest that he and his first wife split simply because she was in a car accident is shallow indeed.

So, him being a POW allows him to get away with anything and be foregiven. That sounds as if you're saying he's addle brained (smile). You know, not responsible for his behavior because he was in a POW camp being tortured. If this is true and he's not responsible, then why would you feel he's responsible enough to be President of the United States?

See now, if I were being serious, Gladys would have totally repudiated my comments with that profound logic. I'm not being all that sarcastic. (yet) It truly makes sense.

Sources who prefer to remain anonymous say that McCain was brainwashed during his time as a POW. There's a bunch of time bomb conditioning that's starting to surface.

Where is Ross Perot when you need him? He should be speaking up about this debacle. Well, some people have a lot more class than John McCain, that's for sure, including his ex-wife.

The whole "poor POW" line is getting old. A lot of guys spent time in WWII POW camps - and were more poorly treated than McCain owing to the fact that their daddies weren't admirals or generals. What really counts here is the fact that this guy was so shallow and heartless as to pursue a much younger, richer woman all over the country, publically, while still married to a crippled wife back home. At least have the decency to get divorced BEFORE you go off tramping for Barbie doll in public, humiliating your wife throughout the country. No wonder his kids don't want to be seen with the bastard and will have nothing to do with the campaign. Just makes me want to puke.

And then, contrast that with Michelle & Barack Obama and their beautiful girls. THAT is a family. THAT is what is meant by family values, love, commitment and respect.

You McCain supporters - you don't even know what a true family looks like when you see it you're so brainwashed.

Very sad indeed. McCain appears to have dumped his first wife after she got old and hurt but there are two sides to every story but I do find this story very sad especially for Carol. John and Cindy like all of us will have to face their maker one day. If these are "family values" then they are values I don't want to have.

I don't believe any politician is all that perfect. Just because a family is "picture perfect" doesn't mean that it isn't a miserable existence for the ones who live there.

I find it interesting to read political debates though... once people settle on a candidate they get almost evil about defending that position. Arguing over the next president seems to create more passion than discussing the failing economy right now?

I've always had an admiration for John McCain and thought his values were pretty good. I discounted the marriage failure as so many of today's marriages end in divorce, and being apart for the length they were, and coming back to a person who had changed so much in his absence made the break up not unusual.

However, I'm beginning to wonder as he changes virtually every position he has held dear simply to get elected. He sounds like a person who really believes Bush's tax cuts were great for our country, in spite of the fact that he opposed them at the time. Other issues seem to go the same way, if they will get him elected, he will use them.

Guess he just jettisons everything that doesn't get him ahead.
