I am Fraenir, son of the brave dwarf king Hreidmar,
forced by unfortunate circumstance to go to war.
The kingdom’s gold and many of its arms were
stolen during last night’s celebration feast, where
my stupid guards fell fast asleep.
The gold dragon named Volsunga is my sworn,
avowed and desperate enemy! My sons Otr and
and Regin have now sworn blood revenge on
that flying devil! We will go forth and destroy him!
We set out on the first clear morn of November,
loaded down with chain, slings, bows, arrows,
poison tipped spears and magic potions made
by Flenir my soothsayer and greatest wizard.
The journey to Volga’s Land, the end of the
known world, was perilous and hampered by
bad weather, steep mountain passes and
treacherous obstacles of all description.
Our mounts had to be let loose at Lagolid, not quite
halfway on our quest! The poor animals might never
have made it back to our homeland if we hadn’t
sent Jokanir, my humble peasant footman with them.
After passing the river of Guarmin, our progress was
as slow as the snake crawls! Carrying all our supplies
and what sorry weapons we did have left on our backs,
we tired easily and had to fight wind, rain, sleet and hail!
As we neared the end of the earth, we became more
cautious and curious. We expected to see Volsunga
flying over and attacking us at any moment! We took cover
at every opportunity to be ready for that worm’s attacks!
We continued on slowly, carefully and we thought stealthally,
until there was heard such a loud boom that we nearly all fell
to the earth! Then we saw a blinding splash of golden light
and a spectre of light so bright that we were almost blinded.
After this frightening display of light ended there came down
from the sky, a rain of molten mal-formed rocks, nearly setting
all the landscape around us on fire! We had unwittingly stumbled
too near the live volcano of Inscindor, the greatest volcano of our lands.
