Pelican Beach

On Saturday we my sons and I went with my friends from Denmark to the beach. We stayed out of the water (mostly) as the boys and I still had our colds, but there were still lots to see.

Fort Lauderdale beach was very crowded and while the water was a bit rough, the weather was very nice. The boys played in the sand, and my friends went in the water.

I guess there were lots of fish in the water Saturday, as the pelicans were hunting for fish. In fact, I was surprised of how close to the people the pelicans were, and when they went diving it looked a bit dangerous considering how close to the swimmers they got.

You got some fantastic shots! We saw lots of pelicans on the beach last month but they were always in places we couldn't stop and take pictures!

Beautiful pictures! Is this near Pelican Island? We went to Galveston for our vacation this year and we visited that island. It was awesome!

Thanks Rose and Bridget. I'll admit that I had to take quite a few shots to get them in the dive. They flew around a few times, and then all of a sudden, they made the dive very quickly. I was actually amazed at how clear the photos turned out, as I felt like I was shooting in the blind.

Isn't it crazy how close the dove to the people though?

No, it is not Melissa. I would love to go there though. This is actually at Fort Lauderdale Beach in South Florida, but the Pelicans sure had taken over.

Great shots. We went to Clearwater beach one year when we were in Florida visiting friends and family. Not one of the usual beaches we go to but we decided to take a drive to somewhere different and the pelicans were there too. They would dive into the water within inches from us.

If pelicans eat fish and sharks eat fish and the pelicans were that close to people....Hmmm...Great job on the photos. I'm curious as to what kind of camera you use. I'm looking to buy one and am starting to do my research.

Chris, I think I would rush of from the water, if they got that close to me. They were to the left of us, so they did not get that close to my friends.

Jennifer, that's funny, I was sitting there thinking the same exact thing. Did I mention that the boys and I stayed out of the water:) I use a Panazonic FZ 7, it has 12 x optical zoom, and I have had it for 1 1/2 year with no problems at all. I can highly recommend it, but I think there is a newer model FZ 8 out now.

Great shots!

I love watching the Pelicans flying in formation here. I can never get shots like yours though. They don't get that close to the people here.

Wow, you got wonderful shots. We went to the beach this morning and saw some of these magnificent birds fishing but I can't seem to get photos and when I do they are not as good as these. Aren't they beautiful? Great captures.

Those are astounding photos, j r! I just loved hanging out with the pelicans when I was in Englewood, FL. Watching them catch and eat fish on the dock was hilarious.

I had a pelican steal a hot dog from me once at Clearwater Beach. They're very aggressive.

Great pictures. Last year this happened to us in Clearwater beach I had never seen so many pelicans so close they were diving for fish all around us.
