Life in the Nursing home sure has changed a great deal since I first started writing this column, way back in aught six. For me, the most major change has been in the Nursing home population. It used to be that we cared for a lot of patients with Alzheimers' Disease and Cancer. I thank my lucky stars on a daily basis that the cure for Alzheimers was as simple as doing away with chemical food additives.
Frankly, I'd much rather spend my days dealing with a pleasantly confused little old ladies,, than dealing with these CD wackos. CD, or Crack Dementia started being noticed back in 2015, and you'd think, with as deadly a disease it is, with its convulsions, violent mood swings, hallucinations, and anorexia, people would just stop using the stuff. I get sick and tired of caring for people young enough to be my kid, just because they wanted a cheap high. It is painful to watch them agonize day after day. Oh well, just goes to show you, you can't teach everyone.
The pot we give them calms them down for a few hours, and since the more powerful antipsychotic drugs don't work on them, we do what we can. Why didn't they see that ingesting all those chemicals would catch up with them? And to top it off, it wasn't the cocaine after all, but the damn baking soda it is mixed with. Who knew that smoking good ole Arm & Hammer could cause early onset dementia?
We still see our share of Cancer, but since tobacco was outlawed in 2016, it has dropped way back.Isn't it funny that all those tobacco farmers are now getting government subsidies to grow hemp? God Bless President Clinton. Chelsea, that is. The stem cells help a lot too, now that we can grow a new pancreas or liver, the Cancer folks are generally just here for a little rehab, then back home.
Nowadays, we also seem to be bombarded with sports injuries on the Rehab side.. Don't these octotogenarians realize that just because they still look forty, their innards are freakin' eighty! They never should have started offering Botox at WalMart.
I guess the other major change is that I'm still working. I had hoped to retire in '19, but when President McCain did away with Social Security to pay for the Iranian War,back in '2009, that had to be shelved. I still like the little luxuries that a steady paycheck brings, such as food and electricity. Maybe next year.

Sorry to have made you tear up this early. Nah, no I'm not. Thank you, my friend.
Is is in my world..ha ha
Glad you enjoyed it. Who knows what the future might bring. When I originally wrote this, two years ago, the part about the Iranian War seemed far fetched. I took the liberty of changing the original article's pres. from Cheney to McCain...sue me..lol
Ahh, in a perfect world, me too.
Gather Broadcasting: Have it your way
This takes you in the front door, and this takes you in the back door. If you’ve been, don’t click again.
I was listening to a talk radio interview with some neuropsychiatrist just the other day and finally decided to do what Ross has been bugging me to do for as long as we've been together - no more diet pop, etc for me.... Ross calls it all black death .... the doc was describing physical changes to the brain as a result of drinking it.... I NEEDS MY BRAIN.
I have decided it's just not worth the risk.
Now, to just quit smoking, also .... since what good is a brain without oxygen?
I did put a bit of thought into this. I wouldn't go so far as to say "prophetic"(THANKS! DEBRA), but I did take into account some of my own personal beliefs about additives and how they may affect us in ways we haven't even thought of yet.
A Politician?
Glad to see the American Nurses Association stepped up to the plate and endorsed Barack.
Today's New York Times had a strong investigative story on Palin. Here's hoping it will make a difference. See the rundown of related stories in this post from Kathryn.
Chemical additives. Interesting because these are important. I believe that to a certain extent Alzheimer's is preventable - moderate or light alcohol intake, pure, whole food, lots of mental exercise - read, read, read, - learn new skills and languages - and exercise, plenty of it every day.
Then of course, there is the dementia caused by certain types of cholesterol in the blood. Well, that needs to be kept under control, too.
You may know Jennie McCarthy - she is with Jim Carrey - a former playboy model and actress and author of funny books. Her son (not Carrey's) has autim, which she says she has largely cured with pure foods.
Spread away, sugar. Spread it as wide as you like.
Kathryn,
I agree about the Alzheimer's . Keeping one's mind as active as possible is a proven preventative.

They can have my coffee when they will pry my coffee cup from my cold dead hand.......
Lovely article.
CD is a FICTIONAL disease. I hope y'all got that this is tongue-in-cheek?
Angela,
Me too, darlin', me too.
Just give the Obama campaign a holler, and I'll put on the white wig..lol
Could you elaborate? I have never seen it, nor have any of my Nurse friends and co-workers. I also could not find anything online related to such a disorder. Perhaps have you been hitting the pipe a little early this morning?...just kidding
Andrea,
One never knows...
I get digital dyslexia from time to time as well..
