In the 80s we had MTV. All Music all the time! 20 some odd years later.. Well lets look at the Satellites TV Guide.
Aggghhhh!!!! *Whew!* Calmer now.
Ok everyone knows MTV (Music Television) Became RNMTV (Reality No Music Television). Then VH1 also owned by MTV follows suit and starts doing the same thing. VH1 Classic which used to be solid old videos from the 50s 60s 70s 80s and early 90s is slowly edging its way toward that same thing. Imagine turning on VH1 Classic expecting to see Classic music videos and instead you find old episodes of "The Real World"!!
Well that's what happened to me tonight. No it wasn't VH1 Classic. It was CMT! "Nanny 911" in what seems to be a marathon, followed by...no not music videos... "Cribs". HUH? So I look on the guide again and find Sunday at 3:00 PM we get a movie called "Funny Farm". Yeah the Chevy Chase movie. Ummm..What exactly does this have to do with country music? After this we get 2 hours of Country Fried Home Videos. They aren't too bad if you like watching drunk morons taping themselves after what I figure is "Hey hold my beer and tape this". A few laughs but again no music. Next a couple hours of Redneck Weddings (Yeah its exactly what it sounds like) where rednecks try to see how stupid they can make themselves look on their wedding day to get it paid for. These people might actually reproduce at sometime and their kids are going to have to hide in shame after seeing their Mother slip and slide down a beer slide. Cute for a night out while in college. Not real cute when the kid finds out his mom got pregnant after getting drunk on her wedding day by sliding into a beer pool that other peoples body juices including urine possibly have become a part of. "Yeah Mom...proud of you! Thanks!" And parents wonder why kids would ever want to move out and across the country. Simple parents...Reruns. You get the point. Where's the music?
It's the same with other music channels too...No matter the musical genre. Fuse, BET, MTV2 as well feel they must show movies and reality shows, but why? Yeah some of them are popular. Honestly I don't understand why unless its that teens like to see that someone is a bigger geek than they are.
So again I go to the TV Guide on my satellite and look at the supposed music video channels. I seems that only two Video stations actually stick to Music and music related programming. GAC or Great American Country is one and the other is GMC or Gospel Music Television. These are the only two choices we have is we want Music video programming at most any given time?? *Smacks forehead!*
Ok so lets look at VH1 and VH1 Classic just to see how many actual hours out of a 24 hour period are only music videos on Saturday at midnight to Sunday at Midnight.
VH1 : 6 hours of Music Videos and 18 hours of other programming
VH1 Classic: 12.5 hours of Music Videos 12 AM to 12 PM and 11.5 hours of other
Lets look at the others. Now I am curious.
MTV : 22 Hours of reality and 2 hours of Music video but only on the MTV Video Music Awards. Other than that Not a single music video.
MTV 2 : 20 hours of Reality and 4 hours of Music again 2 of that is the MTV Video Music Awards.
FUSE : 9.5 hours of music videos : 4 Hours of infomercials : 10.5 hours of movies and other.
CMT : 8.5 hours of music videos : 12 .5 movies and reality: 2 hour of infomercials: 1 hour of Church related
So out of a possible 144 hours of programming investigate we come to these results.
6 Channels Time spent on :
Music Videos :42.5 Hours
Infomercials : 6 hours
Reality & Movies 95.5 Hours
Yeah I'm on a rant. I don't understand. I don't think I'm meant to. I cant even blame Bush for this and according to what I have read we can blame him for everything wrong in creation. But even Bush steps back and can say "Yeah I lied about everything else, but I did not kill MTV." That aggravates me. Wait! It is his fault! He should have implemented a "No Video Left Behind" policy. Better now. Off to find some 80s music to jam to.
