On the 7th anniversary of the terrorist attacks on 9/11/01, I wanted to take a moment, as many have done, to share some observations.
On the days following 9/11 the nation came together as one. As you looked down the streets, almost every house had an American Flag flying proudly in front of it. None of the houses had Democrat, Republican, Libertarian, or any other sign on it. If a word were written it would have been American. It didn't need to be, because the flag said it all. Of different backgrounds, colors, creeds, and ethnicities, but all American. There may have been differences of opinion and ideas, but all loved their country more.
Fireman, police, and military personnel were elevated to superhero status. These heros, who did not want to be called so, were just doing their jobs. If they only knew the impact they would have.
I saw soldiers, sailors, marines, fireman and police, in New York as well as at the Pentagon, standing there proudly to pay honor to their fallen comrades. Without party affiliation or campaign buttons on their uniforms, they serve this country with pride and distinction. The words, God, Family, Country, ingrained on their hearts, serving a cause greater than themselves.
How interesting it was today, Barack Obama, and John McCain, walking side by side during an intense battle for the White House, with no other purpose than to pay respect to those who died that day. No campaign ads, no speeches, no fierce criticism, just 2 Americans walking side by side on a common purpose. If they can do it for a day, perhaps everyone could.
Let September 11th be known as National Unity Day. A day in which we can put the fighting aside and cometogether simply as Americans. Gather shows that it takes each of to help all of us to earn points, perhaps it take each of us to help all of us make the world a better place. If you agree, write your congressman, senator, and other elected officials. And let's get National Unity Day started.

Perfectly said.
"No campaign ads, no speeches, no fierce criticism, just 2 Americans walking side by side on a common purpose. If they can do it for a day, perhaps everyone could."
I remember a national sense of "unity" that day, when we all thought "let's get these bastards!"
Let's try that.

But I guess it helps instill fear into the citizens of the USA by keeping him around.
Then at election time, he can say, "Only Republicans can keep you safe."
