I am, as you may know, a huge fan of digital books, what with their versatility, cost-effectiveness, and...erm...digitalness. But I am decidedly not a fan of people who take advantage of technology to steal the intellecutal property of others. This joker from the DIY craft site instructables.com almost loses a finger to a table saw while trying to make Abby Hoffman's Steal This Book photocopyable. (Don't worry, the pics are SFW.) "I didn"t even get any blood on the book," Mr. Anderson proclaims excitedly in his post, "so the scans are fine." Oh, joy!

Though he ultimately succeeds in creating a 400dpi PDF of the book, I'm guessing Mr. Anderson is going to have a tough time operating his digital reader device of choice with one less fingertip.

Trust me: don't try this at home.

It is so easy to get hurt while stealing this book. I think it was a setup, not a real injury. It's too neat!

So when are we going to have a Napster for ebooks? Or do we need to establish a real ebook reader first?

I think it is a great genre but I kind of like the old fashioned way of reading a book.
