Who are the women against Sarah Palin?

September 10, 2008 02:19 PM EDT (Updated: October 02, 2008 07:03 PM EDT)

Note:  For some reason this comes up occasionally with the comments in the middle of the article, so PLEASE SCROLL DOWN IF THE ARTICLE SEEMS LIKE A SHORT ONE!

There are some times when I feel particularly alone in my political beliefs as I live in a semi-rural area.  It is known for its downhome charm and national wildlife refuge as well as its ultra-conservative, vocal minority which attempts to speak loudly for everyone else.  I love the majority of the people in my town as they care deeply about their children, help one another in times of trouble and have generous hearts when it comes to philanthropy and community involvement.

My state of Washington, however, allows this conservative, family-oriented area to flourish within a very progressive environment.  After all, we have a female governor and two female U.S. Senators, which is a first in the country.  My point?  I know something about females who are excellent public servants in high places.  In that light, I offer you a link to a site that hosts the responses to a letter originally sent on September 3rd, 2008 to 40 friends of the writers.  The subject?  Governor Sarah Palin's candidacy and the women who do not support her and their reasons.

Here is a small excerpt and then the full link.

Women Against Sarah Palin

On Wednesday, September 3, we sent out an email to 40 friends and colleagues asking them to respond to Sarah Palin’s candidacy as Vice President of the United States. They forwarded the letter to their friends across America. By Tuesday, we had received more than 40,000 responses from women of all ages and backgrounds. Below are their voices.

"Come, come, my conservative friend, wipe the dew off your spectacles, and see that the world is moving."
—Elizabeth Cady Stanton

"And I am especially proud to say in the week we celebrate the anniversary of women's suffrage [that she is] a devoted, a devoted wife and mother of five."
—John McCain introducing Sarah Palin

"If this doesn't resonate with every woman in America, I'll eat my hat."
—Alaska delegate Bill Noll on Sarah Palin

Dear Bill, get ready to eat your hat. —The Eds.

Women say NO - Part 15
I don't support Sarah Palin as a candidate for Vice President because I don't want my grandchildren to live in a nation that, in accordance with her political views, would deny them environmental protection and alternative energy development or sex education, and a right to chose. The last administration has shown us how effective the VP can be in circumventing the Constitution.
-Juanita L., 61, Lancaster, PA

Sarah Palin may be a mother and she may be a fighter, but she is fighting for herself, not for us. She will take out others for her own interests and beliefs whether or not they reflect our needs. From trying to ban books to firing people who disagree with her, to being part of a secessionist group in Alaska - Sarah Palin is a self-serving religious fundamentalist who would rather spend state money and time on personal feuds than governing for the good of all. Her extreme beliefs regarding abstinence-only education did not work even for her own daughter! and yet she wants to force it on our daughters! We will not have it. We can do better, there are stronger, more thoughtful and fair minded women in this country who are fit to run it.
-Aquene F., 26, Milwuakee, WI

If the Republican ticket wins, our country would be effectively destroyed in terms of our economy, the direction of the Supreme Court, and the elimination of rights we currently hold dear.
We need to prevent this woman from pretending to be a voice for women and realize she is just a shill for the far right.
-Andrea D., 45, Rogers, Arkansas

I am completely offended by the idea that today's woman would vote for Sarah Palin on the basis of her gender. I supported Hillary because she was the strongest and most qualified candidate for President, and would never equate her with Sarah Palin. Her positions on the key issues of the day are uninformed and ill-advised, and I will do whatever I can personally to make sure she does not become the VP of the United States. Her nomination is appallingly negligent on the part of the Republican party. Big surprise.
-Angela L., 45, Austin, TX

I am appalled at the thought of Sarah Palin in the No. 2 spot in this country. McCain says he wants 'change,' but his downright hypocrisy in choosing her is shining through. McCain has finally, openly, shown his disdain for the intelligence of the American woman, and surrendered his vaunted maverick title to the Bush/Cheney/Rove ultra-Conservatives.
Does McCain really think that the women of America will vote for a Sarah Palin who agrees with those policies and worse, just because she's a woman???
-Portia D. (I'm 76, and thought I'd seen the worst in all these years. Wrong!), Staten Island

We have nothing against Sarah Palin, but it is inconceivable that the Republicans have chosen her instead of other qualified women as a Vice-Presidential candidate, if in so doing, they were trying to make history, they may well do it with frightening consequences.
-Sophia G., 53, Norwalk, CT

I oppose Sarah Palin because she is John McCain's running mate. John McCain, the man who laughed when one of his supporters called Hillary Clinton a b*tch. The man who has promised to nominate extreme right-wing judges to the Supreme Court. It doesn't matter what Sarah Palin stands for (though in fact she stands with McCain on these issues), because you wouldn't be voting for Palin for president, you'd be voting for McCain.
-Janet L., 44, Palo Alto, CA

I am a 53 year old woman living in Illinois. I oppose Palin as a V.P. because I believe she represents a move backward, not forward. America needs to shift our approach to meet the challenges. We face a strong China, a growing India and an energy crisis. We need to get out of Iraq. We need a health care system that works for all. We can not use a 1950's mentality of shoot first ask questions later. We can not just keep talking about Vietnam- new world order is here- we've got to move forward not backward.
-R.M., 53, IL

Is Ms.Palin really the best the Republican party has to offer in terms of a female? I guess there are slim pickings for a woman who will support an antiquated and sexist Republican agenda. Please know that Hillary supporters supported her for more than being merely biologically female. The women who have supported Hillary Clinton did so because of her track record, experience and progressive platform, not because she was simply "a woman". Typical interpretation from a party that is clearly a boys club.
-Kristen C., 30, Los Angeles

I say no to Palin because I want all children to be able to attend public schools where the teachers are well paid and trained. I want everyone to have access to health care. There's nothing I think is more crucial, yet this woman and her party disagree.
-H. A., 36, Northampton, MA

I remember the days of back room abortions. And I want the government out of my private business.
-Carole B., SC

She represents nothing but repressive ideas of education, family, government and the US as a part of an International community. The cruel irony of Senator Clinton blooding herself on that glass ceiling only to have a puppet escorted through on the arm of a warrior...
Get out and vote.
Kay J., 57, NYC

About Me We are not in the habit of criticizing women in the public sphere, as we usually feel we should support our female compatriots with as much encouragement as we can. However, Sarah Palin's record is anti-woman. Feminism is not simply about achieving the power and status typically held by men. It's about protecting and supporting the rights of women of all classes, races, cultures, and beliefs. Palin's record and beliefs do not align with this. She was chosen by John McCain specifically because he believes that American women will vote for any female candidate regardless of their qualifications. He is wrong.  View my complete profile
The author of the above site also has a video in which she asks you to also pressure (via a petition on the site) the McCain/Palin campaign to get Sarah Palin before Meet the Press.  The American people will all agree that we deserve at least a minimum of straight forward talk from her.

McCain's campaign manager actually said the other day that they would not allow her to be questionned by the press until we all 'showed the respect and deference' she deserved.  For what?  Does he think she is something other than a political candidate who is asking us to give her the second most important job in the Country?  Such arrogance, conceit, idiocy and delusion is beyond me.  The most amazing part of his diatribe was that he obviously and passionately believed what he was saying.

Here's the complete link in case any of the above links don't work well.

http://womenagainstsarahpalin.blogspot.com/

I may not agree with all the reasons these women express, but by golly I don't feel alone anymore.  And then we also have my God, whom I believe to be our most famous Feminist and Enduring Liberal.  God has truly blessed America.

Who are the women against Sarah Palin?

Any woman who believes the government has no authority to tell them what they can do with their bodies.

Any woman who believes women deserve equal pay for equal work.

Any woman is is appalled that she would even inquire as to how to ban books?

Any woman who can think for herself and won't just vote for a vagina.

I honestly know NO women who will now vote for McCain, even though two weeks ago, several of them planned to. Maybe I just know all the right ones, or maybe what we are hearing about the trend in "white women" to vote for him now is just propaganda? Whatever the reason, I'm counting on you all!

It is a sad day when people think that intelligence, education, knowledge, wisdom and caring for our environment are qualities that women will abandon as qualities we need in a leader in favor of someone simply of their own sex.

We women are being sold short.....vote for Palin simply because she's a woman, regardless of her out-of-touch views on womens' and civil rights? Chances are good that this next administration will be choosing at least one new Supreme Court Justice. Do we want to allow another right-wing judge to determine the laws we will have to live with for generations? I'm against Palin because I'm concerned about the future of my granddaughter.

Well isn’t that nice. You know what? I will bet you that there are a whole lot of African Americans who aren’t voting for Obama. I will bet you that there are a whole lot of veterans that aren’t voting for McCain and a whole lot of plagiarizers who aren’t voting for … on second thought strike that last joke, someone’s probably said it already.

I know it’s a common thought among the liberals out there that all women must be liberal. Thankfully this is not the case. Don’t worry because those conservative women would never vote for Hillary anyway.

Excellent article, Elizabeth. I have felt insulted that the GOP thinks that American women will vote for this backward thinking, inexperienced, condescending person just because she is female.

I also find it ridiculous that the news channels today have been filled with nonsense about lipstick on pigs when we are involved in an unwinnable war, our economy is sinking as if in quicksand, our airlines and auto industries are sliding into bankruptcy and the myriad of other problems we face.

We still don’t know a lot about Palin except that she’s better at delivering a speech than McCain and that she defends her own pregnant daughter’s right to privacy even as she would have the government intrude to police the reproductive choices of all other women.

400,012 Thanks for this good reference site, Elizabeth. I have been heavy hearted that polls, which some people use to tell them how to join the winning side, have been saying that white women are for Gov. Palin. Why? I want to scream, why?

I was sure there were many who are not because nobody I know is for that ticket. Now, I know where to connect with them.

I can't name a single woman I have spoken to who supports Palin. To the contrary, all are appalled by her political and social views, and her habit of politics by intimidation. We might not be in Iraq if Bush hadn't intimidated and/or fired scores of people from the Pentagon until he found some who would swallow his hogwash with a smile. Palin doesn't represent change at all. She thinks and believe in the same things as George W. Bush, who is only the worst president in history, by a large margin.

Wow... my people! Honestly, I was so encouraged by that site (courtesy of a dear family friend who brought it to our attention, and her mother brought it to hers) that I could not resist posting it on Gather. I just never believed that even a slim number of women will support Palin. She supports Bush's policies 97% (compared to McCain's of 90%), which makes her even scarier than McCain!

I'm just a typical male pig, no lipstick, but as long as I use the head on my shoulders there's no way I could support Palin. I'm afraid the fact checking on her speech has reflected badly on her. Not to mention the fact that McCain/Palin are being sold by the same people that sold us Bush/Cheney and there are very few reasons to want more of that. I'm voting for the smartest, most honest ticket that I see and it ain't McCain/Palin.

i do not support her at all because she is an idiot. However, I am much enamored of her spectacles, and I need new specs soon. I will try to get ones just like hers.

That said, The Boston Globe is reporting the McPalin campaign is still enjoying a significant buzz.

Do not underestimate the number of right-wing idiots in this country. They elected GW in 2004.

Elizabeth, this was fabulous! I finally found the thread of my people! I too was terribly insulted that McCain assumed we would all hop on board and just vote for any ole' woman!
I do not understand the charm of a woman with 5 children being a NRA member, how is this cute? I gues for the Good Ole Boy Club, an obedient woman trumps an African-American scholar anyday.
As stated earlier, a country that voted George W. in NOT ONCE, BUT TWICE could even screw up this no brainer!

Interesting article. I have read a lot of political blogs today. Not sure why the urge struck me. I'm going to post my own article, which makes no choice, as of yet, regarding which ticket I will support, but voices the confusion generated by the self-serving articles and speeches made by both parties, and their supporters. Almost impossible to find any reality in most of it...

This is one woman who loves Governor Palin and will not only vote for her, but has volunteered with the GOP to help get McCain/Palin in the White House. She DOES speak for me. She speaks for the women in my church and my neighborhood. My sisters in other states. And from Gallop's lates polls, she speaks for 49% of us (with Obama only 44%).

Go Elizabeth!!! Me too, me too!!!!

My emotions are on a roller coaster ride. Yesterday I was depressed, because it looked like Palin had hijacked the election, but we have almost two months left for people to sit back, take a breath, and REALLY look at what it would mean to the country if she were in office. Perhaps the voices of reason will win out in the end.

Thank you for this article.

I have friends who are very enamored of Palin, without really understanding who she is, and what she stands for.

She's not ready for the big stage. It's not about gender or religious beliefs, it's about her positions and her absolute lack of knowledge of things outside Alaska.

When people say she speaks for them, I guess it's because she can parrot the Rove/RNC line without gagging.

I am a woman and there is absolutely NO WAY, I would ever vote for Palin. I wasn't going to vote for McCain anyway, but this made it an absolute. I might not agree with McCain (esp. since he jumped on with Bush & his cronies), but at least he was someone who I felt at least believed in what he was doing. She seems opportunistic & obnoxious. If she was put there to get Hilary voters... it didn't work on this one. She has completely different views on almost everything. Instead of showing experience and savy, she compares herself to a pitbull with lipstick. Ugh!

My well-intentioned Aunt Mary, who is a former Navy nurse and now in her golden years, sent me a chain email letter with beautiful photographs like the ones you show above, tagged with a note on how historic the 2008 Presidential election is for women and urging us to get out and vote. I think women of her generation are so anxious to see a woman in the White House that they are overlooking Sarah Palin's record.

Here is the reply I sent back to her, and to the others on her list:

Dear Aunt Mary,

Yes — they were community organizers of the highest order! And they did not speak in tongues. They spoke the truth. I admire these pioneering women.

The current VP candidate is not so virtuous. She makes a mockery of them.

Yes, we must get out and vote. I’m voting for the only candidate left standing who supports equal pay for equal work, affordable health care for working families, an education program that holds people accountable and inspires success in our young people because they are our future. I think that’s what these women would want.

~Lisa

WHO-CARES,what 40,000 or more bitter, angry people have to say. You bitter and angry people need serious help, you are the people responsible for running a candidate Obama is is a true light-weight,and is making a joke of himself.Hate-Hate-Hate.clouds the mind. You had a candidate Hillary who I think could have won.But your rage defeated her,Obama the "man" you picked instead is now falling apart-he is in way over his Pay-Grade and the American people now see it.
But rest easy the man of change is about to do it again----FLIP-FLOP-FLOP-FLIP,HOW? Biden kicked overboard-Hillary brought on-board.This guy Obama is a joke, his judgement is ZERO. The Biden pick sealed the deal.JUDGEMENT&BARACK- OIL&WATER!!!
Now Hillary brought back to save the Rookie,my Jesus, what will Hill-Billy want in return??? How scary is that. SARAH-SARAH-SARAH-YOU GO GIRL.
P.S. Sarah I still admire you even though you never killed one of your infants. Democrat woman feels you should have,in order to be better qualified for V.P. THIS IS HOW BITTER AND ANGRY PEOPLE - THINK! and why they lose.

News alert - the data given about all the white women going over to McCain after Palin was chosen? Now we find out the truth - only REPUBLICAN women were polled.

It is reassuring to see that regardless of what the polls say... as we know these can be SO easily manipulated and then yanked out and waved as if truth... I don't know anyone I respect who is voting the McCain/Palin ticket. Sorry, but that is the way I see it. Why would a woman of any age want to see her body controlled by the neo-cons and the government? That is just crazy.

We are out there working for Obama, giving him money, campaigning with everyone we know and we are united. Nobody in the Obama campaign has stooped to the level McCain and Palin are on.

Obama 08!

This is frightening. At McCain's age of 72, and his history of cancer, this hockey mom/member of the PTA has a greater than 50% chance of becoming the President! We live in a fast changing and dangerous world. Is she ready to face Putin? This is not a small town mayor's job nor is it a job for a 1.5 year governor from one of the country's most sparsely populated states. McCain had many, many more qualified men and women for the job. Has this country gone mad? I'm in!

Oh Well, I guess it strikes me that some women have this big thing about the right to abortion, but little conversation on the sexism, unequal pay, discrimination in the work place, and having enough money to have kids or whatever. Strange.

I agree, Delores. I would hate to think that this whole election is about one spiritual/philosophical aspect of life. Discrimination in the work place, the dry cleaners, the doctors, the insurance companies, the auto garage, the divorce courts... there is certainly a lot of discrimination in many, many areas that directly affects women and those with children.

Delores, Barack Obama is the only candidate right now who supports equal pay for equal work. He also supports family-friendly policies in the workplace, so that working women can be more productive and also balance work and family life. He proposes tax cuts that reward working families making under $250,000 and asks a bit more of people who make more than $650,000. He does ask corporations to contribute more right now because they can afford to contribute more -- he knows these companies will ultimately benefit. They will be more profitable when when the economy gets back on firm footing. He supports affordable health insurance for all Americans, and has the beginnings of a plan to do it. He proposes tax incentives for women-owned businesses. He has fought for reform in education for a long time, and believes in holding people accountable -- schools, educators, students and parents. Of course it is going to take, many, many people working together -- women and men -- from all walks of life to make it happen.

Did anyone watch the CNN forum on service last night? Barack's message is one of personal responsibility and civic involvement. It has been the cornerstone of his campaign. He has energized people who want to come together to make a difference in this country. I see progressive, innovative solutions coming from a whole new wave of people who want to make our country live up to its promise.

I see old, stale ideas and hard-line, dogmatic thinking coming from the McCain/Palin camp.
