We found ourselves pulling into the parking lot for the Bryant Preserving Company.

One could feel that during the work week this was a hub of activity but the day we stopped by there was not a soul in sight.

A big vat on the side of the building caught my attention but it really was not the subject that I was persuing.

Nope, that was the Watermelon Truck.

It was parked out back of the plant quietly waiting to be unloaded.

Somewhere there must be some kind of Southern folklore about the watermelon truck.

Or perhaps songs of summer and youth and the power of the watermelon?

Either way, I got my shots and decided one day I might just find out what they were making with this watermelon.

Hmmm - Watermelon Rind.

Thanks CC
Lynn - I ain't saying nuthin' ;-) (Seriously, those things were packed in there pretty tight - it would have been quite an accomplishment to set one free and I certainly wasn't up to the task).
Thanks Richard - off the beaten track can be a pretty interesting place, aye?
I appreciate that Natalie - and it's good to be back.
d.g - oh, don't get me started on those chicken trucks - that would be a whole different kind of essay - I hate them!
Thanks Gerry and Elaine
Jennifer - it did turn out to be a fun subject. Now if only it had been by the side of the road I might have gone black and white for these shots.
As for the truck - man, I'd follow a truck full of watermelons anywhere, especially on a hot Summer day. A perfect Summer day is sitting under a tree by the side of a stream with watermelon and sweet tea, and the boom box playing Lady Day singing "Summertiiiiiiiiiime, and the livin' is easy..." Ahhhhhhhhhh! Perfection!
Nana - thanks - it was fun to take this detour.
Ina - I'm considering investing in some myself - I'll let you know how it goes :)
Katrina - you almost have me convinced they are worth a try.
Spencer - Hmmm - I wonder why that is - obviously something about the growing conditions wasn't quite right.
Roy - now there's an appealing way to spend an afternoon :)
You have celebrated a great deal here with this piece.
