I was watching a special on TV about obesity in children. There was one girl that was somewhere around 15 years old who was morbidly obese. She had supposedly tried dieting, and it didn't work. So at age 15 she was planning on having liposuction done to take care of the problem. This brought some questions to my mind, and I thought it would make a good discussion.
How bad do you think the "obesity epidemic" is in our country? Do you think liposuction should be used as a treatment for obesity? If yes, at what age should liposuction be considered?
Personally, I am overweight but not obese. I know why I'm overweight - I enjoy the wrong kinds of food way too much. I have never been able to get done to a normal weight because while I do exercise and drink more water now than ever, I'm not willing to cut out the foods that I like completely. I accept this and realize its my fault. What's interesting to me is the people that are overweight who say that they've tried dieting, and it just doesn't work. Barring the ocasional hormonal problem, I'm sure most of those people have just not done the right things for long enough. I have no problem with overweight or obese people as I'm in that category myself... I just figure we ought to be honest with ourselves. I eat too much hence I'm overweight. As far as liposuction for children, I just think we're inviting too many problems.
Please let me know what you think about this topic but be respectful of the opinions of those around you. Thanks!

For me it is a little hard to think it is the children's fault when their parents are and were the ones who bought them the food that got them obese to begin with...my four children grew up on the basics since I couldn't afford to take them to MickeyD's or other fast food places....they ate at home and got such things are broccoli, brussel sprouts, corn, green beans and chicken as those were the cheapest things at the time to eat for us...I was the one cooking so that is what they got along with rice and potatoes...
Thinking back wish I could eat so well these days myself...it takes almost the same I spent back then to buy food for myself these days and I get way less for it...
:O\
I am on a diet now because I am overweight, Like you Sarah I also like the wrong foods.
I am on the "Fat Smash" Diet. I am now in phase three. To date I have lost 23 lbs., I have a goal to lose a total of 40 lbs. 50 would be the ultimate goal, but I'll be happy with 40.
I have allowed my self a moderate 'cheat day' in which I will have a food or two that I gave up. For instance Last Saturday was my cheat day I had two Taco Bell fresco Crispy Beef Tacos & a medium diet soda for lunch, for dinner I had a slice of veggie pizza, with a tossed salad.
This diet in Phase first in phase two & noe in phase three has shown me how to eat. I have learned portion control. Plus I am now eating more fruit and vegetables than I was before I went on this diet.
I do not ever think Liposuction sould be considered as a treatment for obesity.
Ashley - That's true. It's DEFINITELY NOT a diet. It's a lifestyle change.
James - You are so right. Also a lot of the children they showed on this TV show had emotional problems. That's why they ate so much. I think they needed a psychologist more than liposuction.
Parents need to care more and stop blaming children for not eating certain things,I think it's a cop out for them.(my Opinion)
let me explain---
my whole family have a very bad problem with ibesity......
me........130# soaking wet......
ooopsss.......sounds like a Disney cartoon..........
and the food pyramid system we were always taught in health class....these were in t/th and "gym" class was m/w/f......... and sitting around all of the time drives me crazy, even now I force myself to hobble around the 'hood in the am and then go do paper routes in the eves.....
And I think of liposuction as more of a cosmetic procedure, and it shouldn't be covered. Gastric bypass and other procedures should be covered. It is probably much cheaper for insurance companies to cover this initial surgery than years of treatment for obesity related health issues (heart, diabetes) later on.
I have a problem loosing weight. But I know alot of it has to do with me not being mobile. Plus the foods I eat. I don't have alot of money to get the good things for us..have you ever noticed how expenisve the stuff that is good for you is. Plus hubby does the shopping. he gets what he likes.....veggies and fruits are not one of them. I have to pull teeth to get him to get those.
I do not think that liposuction is NEVER an answer for anyone.
The fat will return if you don't learn how to eat properly.
I am the fattest I have ever been in my life. I reached 200 pounds during my pregnancy. I started out at my heaviest BEFORE I even got pregnant. That was because of lack of exercise and too much drinking.
I have already lost 30 pounds since May 30th (Violet's birthday). I am hoping to lose another 30!
that's great ! ! !
I think the first thing people who are overweight need to realize is that it is THEIR choices that make them overweight (that is if they have no medical issues that cause them to be overweight). You have to figure out if giving up the tasty but not good for you foods is worth the health benefits and possible longer life. To me it is worth it and I struggle each and every day but I always remind myself that I want those extra days, weeks possibly years that the healthy food will give me. And there will always be another chance to shove that ice cream cone down my throat, so I don't have to have the biggest one there, the small one is fine.
I hope that made sense. When you get me started on weight loss I tend get long winded because it's been such a hard, yet rewarding journey for me.
Okay, that's my $5 worth.
I could not WAIT to eat THOSE hamburgers! YUMMY! Natural meat!
But when I tasted them, I spit it out. I did NOT eat them. I said,
"Mommie, there is something wrong with this meat. It's nasty."
What was "wrong" with the meat was that is WAS 100% natural.
My uncle did not use steroids, additives, and the other JUNK in his pasture, or the other things used today by butchers and large meat processing companies when they are preparing meat. Lesson learned; lesson NEVER forgotten.
The reason that children -- and adults -- are heavier today is because of all of the additives, and the chemicals used in the processing of foods. It's true, that some of them are unavoidable, but many are.
The best way to lose weight is through diet
Fresh fruits and vegetables, (or frozen, too)
Fish and poultry
Unsalted nuts, in fact no iodized salt, try sea salt
Vitamins
Unsweetened juices (natural juices)
NO SUGAR, or at least try to avoid processed sugar.
If you chow down on fresh fruit and especially fresh veggies, there is virtually no limit to how much of them you may eat. Then see just how much weight you shall lose.
It is not so much how much you eat, but WHAT you each, and by the way,
alcohol causes weight gain.
I am overweight as you can see from my icon. I was told at 36 my metabolism was so slow it was like it packed it's bags and left. The diets I have tried may yield the loss of a few pounds I usually ended up sick.
Since 2002 I have been unable to exercise so the pounds go on very easily.
