Why ‘To Kill a Mockingbird' Should be Withdrawn from Public Libraries.
‘To Kill a Mockingbird' should be withdrawn
From public libraries. It puts to scorn
America. This novel undermines
Our basic values. Read between the lines!
That black boy raped Mayella without doubt
But we are meant to trust the word of Scout,
A girl who chose to dress in denim jeans
And smoke string (made from hemp) which I think means
She was a dope fiend from an early age -
Her left-wing slant is clear on every page.
Her father was to blame, there's no excuse -
Allowing kids to grow up fast and loose.
Her uncle was unmarried, wore cologne,
Perhaps we're meant to think he lived alone.
He may have paid his dues to NRA
But that doesn't mean for sure he wasn't gay.
Bob Ewell is maligned throughout the book,
But he was just a red-neck down on luck
And trying hard to keep his family fed.
He earned no money, but at least he bred.
That trickster Finch outwitted him in court,
A smartass lawyer, yes, you know the sort,
He tried to make a big name for himself
Not worried if it cost his children's health.
So Atticus was handy with a gun,
But didn't have the sense to arm his son.
If Jem had packed a rod that fateful night
He would have held the whip-hand in the fight.
I don't say Ewell was right to stab the ham,
But was that any worse than Finch's scam
To cover up the role of Boo Radley
Ensuring that Bob's killer could walk free?
Quite clearly that strange misfit was insane
And thanks to Finch was loose to kill again.
Yes, all right-thinking people should agree
To shun the wicked works of Harper Lee.
For all good Christians it should be declared
A sin to read ‘To Kill a Mockingbird'.

T'was always one of my favorite books, and the movie was one of the few that didn't ruin the story. I fell in love with Atticus when I was about 7. He has always been a great hero of mine.
Beautifully crafted write, carries a great message, loved the satire, these are stars of envy in my eyes from reading this work.
Another nail in the coffin of the "dumbing down" of Amarika! Timely and necessary.
With what twisted and turned and torqued
The serpents speak with tongues a-forked.
The saddest thing, I think, to see:
America is lost due to it's complacency.
Your words: "Yes, all right-thinking people should agree / To shun the wicked works of Harper Lee. / For all good Christians it should be declared / A sin to read ‘To Kill a Mockingbird'."
So, okay, I must not be a right-thinking person...because I don't agree the bannings.
You want to see me "pack a rod?" Invade our libraries to remove literature, and I'll guard the doors for free!
Multitudinous Blessings on your pen--once again!
Wilka
Sadly, there are many who truly would ban books.
amazed me by structurally and poetically crafting these
delirious, delicious mockeries with such talented teases in
brilliant decameter and rhyme. Thanks for the heads up prompt.
I enjoyed this tremendously. How about a piece on "Lord Of The Flies"
....plenty of material there as well........gawd.....with her the material
would be endless........I need to go check the list of books she
wanted to remove again.
On a serious note, book banning is unacceptable on any level, and any politician who would even inquire on how to ban books should not even be allowed on the national stage.
Look what the Nazis did in WWII with books that they did not agree with, they burned them so that they could put out their brand of "truth" and not have anything to disagree with their truth...
Oh, I read it when I was in high school way back when...dang that was a long time ago now...and loved it even then...To Kill a Mockingbird is one of the best books ever...
Here in Georgia we had some crazed woman who wanted to ban the Harry Potter books because they promoted witchcraft...at least her suite was dismissed as what it was some idiotic ravings...last I heard she was going to take her case for the banning of the books to the Supreme Court...oh no...with the make up of it these days who knows what their ruling will be...
:O\
then read it again!
Thanks.
She inquired about TWO books only: "Go Ask Alice," and "Pastor, I am Gay."
"Go Ask Alice," is a controversial book about the ACTUAL diary of a young girl who died of drug abuse. It caused a sensation when published. Revelations about the book's origin have caused much doubt as to its authenticity and factual accounts, and the publishers have listed it as a work of fiction since at least the mid-late 1980s.
"Pastor, I Am Gay," is a controversial book about young gays and lesbians.
Palin had been approached by other members of the community about these books in the library. She raised the question with the librarian, who took immediate offense. Palin never followed up on banning any books.
The smear campaign against Gov. Palin saying she supposedly tried to ban books from the library is just that. If you look at the list of books they say she tried to have banned, you will find many of them had not even been published yet. Example: The Harry Potter books, the first of which wasn’t published until 1998. And remember this story is twelve years old and was just dug up again when she was announced as the VP candidate.
The smear merchants who continue to circulate the list also failed to do a simple Google search, which would have showed them that the bogus Sarah Palin Banned Book List is almost an exact copy-and-paste reproduction of a generic list of “Books Banned at One Time or Another in the United States” that has been floating around the Internet for years.
This again, is a 12 year old issue, only brought up again since Sarah Palin was announced as the VP candidate.
unfortunately, many years ago, a religious group in my city had decided that all things Walt Disney were "evil" and "tools of the devil" that were warping the minds of their children ....... Know what they wound up doing? ..... why, they held a good, old-fashioned, disgusting book burning party .......
I was apalled at the number of people who actually attended this event ..... it was all over the local, 6 o'clock news ........ I felt ill watching the footage of these "christians" whooping and hollering as they threw items onto a large bonfire .... books, VHS tapes, stuffed animals ......... all the while demanding censorship and the destruction of all of these "evil" items so the "children" would not be emotionally harmed by them, or led astray ......
sorry ..... didn't mean to get off-topic ..... just pointing out how the ignorant, and even the "educated" can twist one thing into something else .....
Did she in fact fire Mary Ellen Emmons, the librarian who defied her?
Yes, Andrea, I am very familiar with Swift's pamphlet 'A Modest Proposal'. It was shocking then and retains the ability to shock to this day. I believe it was quite influential - it may have pricked a few consciences - but the British aristocracy and landed gentry of the day were extremely thick-skinned. Their treatment of the Irish, and indeed, the English 'lower classes' was despicable. Nevertheless, I feel satire has made a significant contribution to social change, usually for the better (but that would depend on your point of view, of course).
Although she said, in a letter to her that she didn't feel that Emmons supported her policies and had to go.
Emmons had been city librarian for seven years and was well liked, Palin relented and let Emmons keep her job. Emmons left of her own accord a year later.
It all happened 12 years ago and the controversy long ago disappeared into musty files. Until this week. Under intense national scrutiny, the issue has returned to dog her. It has been mentioned in news stories in Time Magazine and The New York Times and is spreading like a virus through the blogosphere.
The vicious attacks on her and her family are relentless. It is said that the Obama campaign has disbursed a hundred people to search for dirt on Palin. These are some of the things they're digging up. Allegedly, they approached Palin's ex brother-in-law, (TrooperGate)and offered him $30,000, in exchange for dirt on Palin. He decined the offer.
I love this book and it's still required reading for freshman english lit classes. My daughter and her friends also loved the book. They adopted the phrase "bust up a chiffarobe" to mean tackling a tough project. I can't imagine banning this book.
and it still won't sing
The idea that Palin discussed, even hypothetically, book banning with the Wasilla librarian is pretty scary. Palin did want to fire her and was convinced to back down. I'm sure that in the last 12 years she's learned that it's better to see which way the wind is blowing before taking actions like that.
Poor little Palin may soon be impailed on her own petard...or was it hoisted?
Funny, funny, Mike.
Mike, the Mocking Bard. I think you have created a new niche for yourself, Mike! Syndicate it and chuckle all the way to the bank. Controversy does make people think.
I used a great big quote from Wind In The Willows in my book, Journey of the Snow Goose. Nippy: Who was gay, Mr. Rat or Mr. Mole? :)
To quote Seinfeld: Not that there is anything wrong with that.
ROFLMAO
You talent came shining through like the sunlight through the willow trees
(the books is so much better than the movie and the movie was very good)
~ great tongue in cheek ~ LOVE IT.
You did a good job of getting into the minds of uneducated people.
I enjoyed reading the comments here. Well done, Mike.

Anyway, the title caught my attention, and I was ready to unleash all righteous indignation, but instead I... chuckled? Great job, in the vein of Swift, my friend.
