quincy quail’s extended family
lives under the mugu pine bushes
in our front yard. flimflammery
is their main weapon against predators.
the quail familys display bright color,
and wear feathery plumage
on their head. other birds are duller
than the quails, who always dress
even on every day travels. they move
in tight family groups, with guards fore
and aft, keeping young in the groove.
rarely silent, the quail family owns
much of where they march, seemingly
surveying more places to nest and breed.
they seem to walk about sneakingly
finding more seeds and other eats.
quincy quail is the old granddad
to most of the family, he seems, at times,
just a bit haggard and a little sad!
it’s his job, to squeal the alarm!
