I remember in kindergarten many moons ago all we had to do was go 1/2 a day , learn to share and NOT eat the paste and we were golden! HAve times changed or what??
My daughter came out of kindergarten being able to read at a 3rd grade level, but my son is just reading the simple grade level books going into 1st.
and Science http://www.michigan.gov/documents/mde/K-Science_COMPLETE_12-10-07_218315_7.pdf
Also, for kindergarten in MI
Our school starts teaching it in pre K and it seems to work really well, my kids have really
clicked with it.
Just repetition, talk to them all the time ask them questions etc.
After my DD( she is a genious LOL) I was worried about my son going into K last year, he is very smart, but not nearly as motivated towards school as his sister.
So i kept close contact with his teacher and all that jazz and all the while she is telling me he is doing great , but ALL i can see is he is NO where NEAR where his sister was at that time. (never told him any of that of course)
He never made any effort to read, whenever i tried to get him to do it he had no interest, but yet the teacher was saying NO NO he's doing good.
BUt, anyway, the school year ended and he "passed with flying colors" but yet all i seen was this kid who wanted to play video games and play outside an showed no signs of being ANY different academically than he had at the beginning of the school year. So ya know i'm a mom fretting and worrying. We had VBS in August and the kids went the first day, but then my car broke and they missed the next 3 days, and finally made it back on the last day of the bog program.
I told them it was fine for my kids to sit out and they are like no no problems they are ready!
I swear to you i cried like a baby when he stood up and PERFECTLY read 4 sentences from the back of his que card! Then sat back down like it was NOTHING!
When he came over to me after the skit and i said "ZACH you can read??" he say s "well YEAH i did GRADUATE kindergarten!
OK So moral of my story, i dunno i think it got so long i forgot LOL it really did have one when i started HONEST.....
i suffer from Kid induced AADD
LOL
For sound spelling, if the word is spelled like it sounds, just say the word, then ask if they would know what letter it starts with. Then, slow the word down, sounding out just the first letter, then the first 2 together, etc.
For instance, she wanted to spell Yoshi, so to sound-spell it, I said the whole word slowly "Yooooossssshhhhhiiiiii", then when she said "Y", I asked about the next, and started sounding it with just Yoooooooo, until she got O, etc.
Hope that helps!
