It was September, and Nathan Turk was busy at work in the Syracuse Savings Bank Building.
His friend, S.H., was at Lake Placid, still enjoying the lovely weather of late summer in the Adirondack Mountains.
Nathan was pleased to recieve a postcard from his friend.
S. H. wrote to Nathan and encouraged him to "come up" to Lake Placid.
If Nathan would do so, S. H. promised a drive to Ausable Chasm, which is pictured on the postcard.
Unfortunately, there would not be much conversation, as S.H. was "so hoarse I can hardly speak aloud."
The card is in decent condition, but it was not of the higest quality when it was produced.
I made a digital "repair" of a scratch on the surface of the card.
In my growing collection of cards, I have two other views of Ausable Chasm to be posted. Neither of them, however, contain a message.

I am guessing that the S.H. who set the card is Sarah Manning Holdridge, whom he later married (perhaps because she could not speak)
:-)
The link takes you to a "free tial subscription" page.
I also found a free-use image, but Gather will not allow me to put the link in the comment as I used to do.
:-(
Something about the name Turk is familiar enough that I will ask around. There were some stories I heard, not too long ago, about famous NV folks, back when I could get up to Candor for the jam sessions there. I'll see what I can learn.
"Our" Nathan would be 75 years old, but Republican candidates are now that old.
There are many Turks in Republican state positions, but most are from the boroughs of New York City.
I wonder about our young attorney's family.
(There is a Nathan Turk who currently covers the music scene in Syracuse)
Is this the daughter of our Nathan and Sarah?
Do people do whitewater rafting there?
Do people do whitewater rafting there? "
Yes, they do, Sharon.
I have a vintage photograph of a group of men "shooting the rapids".
I believe that Dannielle has actually visited the place.
Yes, annielle.
In the discussion of the Adirondacks (Charles Harkness). I'll get a link.
The Comment thread filled up with recollections of beautiful spots in the Adirondack Mountains.
A Trip to The Adirondack Mountains In 1906
We believe that the writer was Sarah Holdridge, who married Nathan.
She was in fine voice throughout their married years.
I suspect that they did, Dorine.
They were married for a long time; each lived to very ripe years.
Nahan Turk was the delegate to the Republican Convention in 1960, he lived another ten years.
Nice to hear from you, Jody.
Kate and I have derived a lot of enjoyment from the rediscovery of these forgotten lives.
It certainly adds some vividness to our imagination of these lives.
I remember the passport photo of the young man who went to Cuba (the Odd Fellows Hall postcard), and the uncertainty if he had ever returned!
"what a great adventure"
Thanks to Emily and GREMS.
Content, views and discussions like this are a real gift to the community Peter. I wish I had more time to savor all of your contributions.
Thank you.
I thank you for your kind words, Kevin.
I have saved some of the cards and letters that my husband and I exchanged during our courtship. Maybe a "Peter Wimsey" will revive them some day.
It is a charming thing, Mary Louise.
I hope that your correspondence will be prized by your heirs.
It is nice to know that they were married.
