This is a chat / comment space during and after the live streaming of John McCains' acceptance speech. You can listen live on computer. (Opens MPR audio stream)
Are the nomination acceptance speeches that important? Considering each speech is a formal spoken communication and an indicator of the upcoming campaign, I'd like to hear your reactions in real time.

How about taking the insurance company out of it, too?
The tone of the speeches this week does not create the kind of atmosphere that promotes working across party lines. Some if it can be expected because it's a convention after all, intended to rally the troops, but this convention has sunk to a new low.
I hope he does work across party lines come next January as a Senator when Obama is his President.
Julia Star, maybe someone has a transcript since you didn't catch it.
But his "Service to his country as a Senator is horrible.
He talks about reforming and being a Maverick. Then he talks about being a Reagan Repub and so is Palin. Reagan is not someone I would want to be associated with...he is slightly above GWB only because he was more intelligent and personable.
From what I understand McCain and Palin want to do this. Give more tax breaks to the middle class...sounds great until you realize they have changed the standards of middle class to people that make $5 million dollars or there about. Well arent those the same people that get all the good loopholes as being rich? Not reform there.
Then the war in Iraq...he wants to stay the course but now it isnt the War it is a Surge. No reform there.
So they want to reform pork barrel or earmarks...my guess they will just change the name to something else and it will be business as usual.
And if he is such a reformer and there has been a Repub in the white house in all but 8 years of the last 25 or so why is his party so ready to stand behind him...he is in essence calling them all corrupt.
I will tell you why they know he is just blowing sunshine up the peoples butts.
If elected it will be business as usual.
Brian T. will you watch the debates?
Is there a related Gather article about his nomination?
I wonder if there is any beauracratic red tape between McCain and his Dr? No, he has a national plan that we the people aren't privy to.

Julia there are so many political articles I dont know one except yours that is specifically about his acceptance speech.
My point is I wanted 1 person to tell me why McCain is viewed as such a Maverick and if he is truly a reformer than either all the rest of the Repubs are lying and going along with him because he is the nominee....or they know he is just blowing smoke....or I dont know.
These same Repubs praise Bush and then praise McCain for wanting to eliminate Bush's kind of corruption.
Is it just me or does that not make sense?
McCain and Palin are Mavericks and reformers. Now who exactly are they out to reform?
I did some subtle asking on other thread. And this is what I came up with.
They do NOT want to make rich people pay their fair share of taxes. By rich I mean people who make less than $5 million dollars to like $500,000 that is what McCain views as Middle Class. He wants to give them more tax breaks. Now is it just me or is that pretty much same old same old.
He wants to stay the course in Iraq. Again no reforming there.
He says he wants to eliminate pork barrel spending but since he covers up the fact that he has gotten pork and his running mate got even more pork I dont see that as a real issue. That is one of those elect me on this platform but I will never make it happen.
So again who are they reforming?
Bush was on saying what a great guy McCain was???
I dont get it.

Here was one of my comments from an earlier post.
Believe it or not I did get one McCainite to answer me...it was a doozy...if you are interested and dont mind me copying and pasting I will put it up for you.
Another gatherer and I were discussing taxes. And McCains way of ending corruption.
Maybe we need to find out why they hate us and then work on changing so that, at the least, they merely find us unimportant.
Many countries hate us because while France, Germany, Russia and the United Nations were profiting from Saddam Huissian's dictatorship, we ruined their good thing and invaded the country.
My mom told me that you don't have to be popular if you are right. Being a leader isn't always easy.
