Palin promised the parents of special needs children to be on their side last night. What she did not tell them is that she cut funding for those parents by 62%. First they get on stage and talk the good talk. When it comes to walking the walk, suddenly, they have an ankle sprain.
She did the same thing with that "Bridge to nowhere." She told us she opposed. Then we found out she is for it before she became against it.
She is forgainst it. That was a torn ligament.
Now she is talking about special needs children.
For those of you who seem so enamored with Gov. Sarah Palin, it might be worth noting that she oversees the budget for the Department of Education and Early Development Special Schools in Alaska.
These funds provide supplementary educational services to students with severe disabling conditions and the Alaska Challenge Youth Academy. The resident school where the child would normally be placed does not have the resources to provide an adequate educational program. Without the supplementary services the child's needs would not be met by the local school district in most cases.
The following programs are included within this component:
Special Education Service Agency (SESA)
The Annual budget for 2007, which preceded Gov. Palin was $8,265,300.
http://www.gov.state.ak.us/...
The Annual budget for 2008, enacted by Gov. Palin is $3,156,000.
http://www.gov.state.ak.us/...
The Annual budget for 2009, enacted by Gov. Palin is $3,156,000.
http://www.gov.state.ak.us/...
This is a cut in special needs services to children in Alaska of 5,109,300 , or 62%.
So, as the Alaska State Budget description states, "Without the supplementary services the child's needs would not be met by the local school district in most cases."
Did 62% of all of the special needs children in Alaska stop having needs once Gov. Palin took office?
Before we get so excited about Gov. Palin bring her "Reformer" agenda to Washington, perhaps we should get to know a little more about what exactly that means to our children, and the opportunities that she would "Reform".
Zingers and sarchasm aside, she has been lying to you so long you are willing to look for it.

To analogize: If last year, I weighed 200 pounds, and projected to "grow" to 220 pounds this year, but only ended up at 210, that is not a cut. I still gained weight!
Further, the sites you cited cannot even be accessed. Hm.........
Maverick? Hardly. She is a pork-rustler who has flip-flopped and then tried to cover it up.
More like a Sidekick to a Sidekick.
I'm wondering, if now that she has a special needs child of her own, if that budget will be restored. I don't know of a program for special needs kids that didn't need every penny of its budget.
Do you think there are governmental agencies in this country who don't use 95% of their budgets? This was a budget cut therefore a spending cut for that department. In fact they wanted more.
That's a cut, sparky. These programs are created with built-in increases to theoretically adjust for inflation and for projected increased program enrollment. If $8 million is allocated in the budget, that $8 million is accounting for those annual increases. If she cut the funding below that allocated amount, she CUT THE PROGRAM.
Put it this way...let's say that, during the late 90's, you could fill your 20 gallon gas tank for $20. You allocated $20 per week for gas expenses, for as far as the eye could see, but you also included in a 3% increase each year to account for inflation, and say a 2% increase to account for projected additional miles traveled. Today, how much gas does your roughly $28 allocated buy you? Does it buy you as much gas as it did in say 1998, or less? In other words, has you gas program been "CUT," even though you're spending $8 more for it, or has it been EXPANDED, because you're paying $8 more for it?
I just put $20 in my tank last night, I got a 1/4 tank of gas !
5 gallons worth !

This is why they should not cut funding for special needs anyone. We need funding for special needs adults.
Bingo.
Weird...no response from Greg. I thought for SURE he'd chime in again...
I so agree with you but the poor people who believe, honestly believe she'll help them.
She makes a good companion for McSame, since he like Bush, enacted No Child Left Behind, but did not fund it.
Talk is republican, action is democracy
The budget in which the 62% cuts were made was drafted by the governor that Palin replaced, Frank Murkowski. Palin did, in fact, propose and pass a raise in funding for special needs children. While I understand it's important to seek the truth about all the candidates instead of taking their speeches at face value, let's not smear them before exploring the issues.
George, I do not think you realize what it is like to raise a child with a disability. I am not expecting anyone to hold their hand all their lives -- I raise them to be as independent as possible, to stand up for themselves, to work hard, to earn every inch. But having a disability makes that very difficult for them sometimes. Resources are much needed and all too often parents have to fight the schools to get even a little help! Sad but true.
