As someone who appreciates language, I can say that Palin did a fine job delivering her speech last night. She was poised, confident, and presented herself well to her core constituency. Looks like that Beauty Pageant training paid off.
If I was a Republican and reality didn't cloud my judgment, I would have been inspired. She hit all of the talking points that her folks wanted to here, and rallied her troops.
But did she say anything that would change the mind of moderates and independents? Or did she simply cater to like-minded people in her own party?
The Spectre of 9/11
Our son Track is 19.
And one week from tomorrow - September 11th - he'll deploy to Iraq with the Army infantry in the service of his country.
Of course, the spectre of 9/11 appears early in her speech. It's that attempt to use fear to garner votes. And noting that her son in going to Iraq, well, shows she shares something in common with Biden.
About that Mayorship
I guess a small-town mayor is sort of like a "community organizer," except that you have actual responsibilities.
Except your first order of business as mayor was to hire a Business Administrator, and then promptly delegate most of the duties of the mayor to him. The town threatened to recall you...twice. You fired everyone who didn't support you during the campaign, and even tried to fire the librarian because she wouldn't let you censor books in the library. That was how you dealt with responsibilities.
Having worked in small town government in my youth, most small-town mayors are NOT full time positions. It's a few hours a week in the office and attending a city council meeting once every other week.
Outright Lies
I suspended the state fuel tax, and championed reform to end the abuses of earmark spending by Congress.
Yet as mayor, you hired a legal firm to bring millions of dollars in earmarks to a town with, at the time, around 6,000 people.
I told the Congress "thanks, but no thanks," for that Bridge to Nowhere.
Only after the amount of money they were allotting was determined not to be enough to complete it. It's already been noted time and time again you were in fact FOR the bridge..until U.S. taxpayers weren't going to foot 100% of the bill.
And oh, did I mention McCain was a POW?
There is only one man in this election who has ever really fought for you ... in places where winning means survival and defeat means death ... and that man is John McCain. In our day, politicians have readily shared much lesser tales of adversity than the nightmare world in which this man, and others equally brave, served and suffered for their country.
It's a long way from the fear and pain and squalor of a six-by-four cell in Hanoi to the Oval Office.
Define that Victory for us?
Victory in Iraq is finally in sight ... he wants to forfeit.
We already ousted Saddam. We've installed a new government. What, exactly, defines "victory" in Iraq? This is the question? When they all convert to Christianity? According to the Republicans, we can't leave until the government there is able to run itself, but the government can't run itself until we leave.
About those terrorists...
Terrorist states are seeking new-clear weapons without delay ... he wants to meet them without preconditions.
Our failed diplomatic policies over the last eight years, couple with our "shoot first, make demands later" use of force, has strained our military might and emboldened all of these terrorist states. Like a gang that takes over neighborhood after neighborhood because the cops are spread too thin, we can make all the threats we want...but we don't have the resources to do anything other than bark. We need to look at alternatives to war-mongering.
Al-Qaida terrorists still plot to inflict catastrophic harm on America ... he's worried that someone won't read them their rights?
Our Founding Fathers shared the same concern, you idiot. Have you even read the Constitution that you want to swear to uphold?
Have you bothered to read the plan?
The Democratic nominee for president supports plans to raise income taxes ... raise payroll taxes ... raise investment income taxes ... raise the death tax ... raise business taxes ... and increase the tax burden on the American people by hundreds of billions of dollars.
Link to the ACTUALOBAMA PLAN.
http://www.barackobama.com/pdf/issues/economy/EconomicPolicyFullPlan.pdf
The Obama plan lowers taxes for the majority of Americans. It rolls back tax breaks for the wealthy installed by Bush, and closes loopholes that allow the most wealthy to hide money in off-shore accounts.
Way to Slap your own party.
...and comfortable committee chairmen in Congress have fought the prospect of a McCain presidency - from the primary election of 2000 to this very day.
Hey, Sarah, it was the REPUBLICAN Party in 2000 that screwed over McCain, not the Democrats.

I work at an organization that is very bush oriented (that means rural alaska) and walking around watching people watch her was interesting. She's not popular with them, they were all talking about how she's taking everyone for a ride. I guess we'll see. If you had given everyone 1200 dollars for gas two weeks ago they'd be saying nice things about you in the newspaper too.
You all might to know, those of you unfamiliar with alaska is that we have alot of people that are only accessible by plane here. You can actually fly for hours and never see a road. Villages of people with only ATV's and sled dogs and snow go's. She represents alot of those people.
Sarah Palin is one of those rare candidates and she will help her ticket connect with the american public.
Many strong independent thinking women watched the Democratic primary as the press wielded sexists attacks against Hillary and they see it continuing against another strong capable woman.
The Obama Biden ticket has a tough road ahead and I don't think they are up to the challenge.
god
god
god
God damn, perhaps she should have started singing "Onward Christian Soldier". That would scare the shit out of us non-Christians.
She out-Bushed Bush.
Since she only said Obama will raise taxes in America, she remains 100% correct.
Of course she didn't bother to point out that he was only going to raise taxes on the top ten percent or Americans; or that the lower sixty percent would receive tax cuts. All she wants to point at is that he will raise taxes. One could just as equally, emptily and correctly say that she and McCain will also raise taxes.
I thought it was interesting that she said she wanted to end the practice of favoring special interests, then latter said she would see to it that parents of special needs children would receive favors.
Palin will be popular. She has a great American Family Persona and can obviously and easily speak out of all sides of her mouth without twitching.
I really, really, really wish Hillary was the Dem VP. I'd love to see Hillary and Sarah Palin squared off in a debate.
Is it true Vogler was buried in Dawson City, Yukon Territory, Canada, fulfulling a wish that he not be buried under the American flag.?
THE FACTS: As mayor of Wasilla, Palin hired a lobbyist and traveled to Washington annually to support earmarks for the town totaling $27 million. In her two years as governor, Alaska has requested nearly $750 million in special federal spending, by far the largest per-capita request in the nation.
FORMER MASSACHUSETTS GOV. MITT ROMNEY: "We need change, all right _ change from a liberal Washington to a conservative Washington! We have a prescription for every American who wants change in Washington _ throw out the big-government liberals, and elect John McCain and Sarah Palin."
THE FACTS: A Back-to-the-Future moment. George W. Bush, a conservative Republican, has been president for nearly eight years. And until last year, Republicans controlled Congress. Only since January 2007 have Democrats have been in charge of the House and Senate.
FORMER ARKANSAS GOV. MIKE HUCKABEE: Palin "got more votes running for mayor of Wasilla, Alaska than Joe Biden got running for president of the United States."
THE FACTS: A whopper. Palin got 616 votes in the 1996 mayor's election, and got 909 in her 1999 re-election race, for a total of 1,525. Biden dropped out of the race after the Iowa caucuses, but he still got 76,165 votes in 23 states and the District of Columbia where he was on the ballot during the 2008 presidential primaries.
Three months before she was thrust into the national political spotlight, Gov. Sarah Palin was asked to handle a much smaller task: addressing the graduating class of commission students at her one-time church, Wasilla Assembly of God.
Her speech in June provides as much insight into her policy leanings as anything uncovered since she was asked to be John McCain's running mate.
Speaking before the Pentecostal church, Palin painted the current war in Iraq as a messianic affair in which the United States could act out the will of the Lord.
"Pray for our military men and women who are striving to do what is right. Also, for this country, that our leaders, our national leaders, are sending [U.S. soldiers] out on a task that is from God," she exhorted the congregants. "That's what we have to make sure that we're praying for, that there is a plan and that that plan is God's plan."
Video of Kalnins and Palin from June 8, 2008
Palin's address, much of which was spent reflecting on the work of the church in which she grew up and was baptized, underscores the notion that her world view is deeply impacted by religion. In turn, her remarks raise important questions: mainly, what is Palin's faith and how exactly has it influenced her policies?
A review of recorded sermons by Ed Kalnins, the senior pastor of Wasilla Assembly of God since 1999, offers a provocative and, for some, eyebrow-raising sketch of Palin's longtime spiritual home
Sarah came into office just as all the corruption was being brought down by the FBI. She had nothing to do with reformation in Alaska. She just came along when it happened so that people connect her to reformation. People hated Governor Murkowski so much that she was welcomed with open arms. She hasn't had time to flesh out that role here.
Where do you think the Bridge to Nowhere money went..... Alaska still received it. She didn't send the check back and it was dead before she could even say no.
Palin did what she was supposed to do: 1) rile up the base, 2) attack the opponents (facts are not relevant), and 3) not fall on her face. She accomplished that.
Here's one fact check article critiquing Palin and the other Republican speakers last night.
Fact Check
BTW, besides the easily verifiable lies from Palin (um, don't they know that people check facts these days), I watched the speech by Thompson the other night. Man, the guy reads a good speech. I was inspired. I was also shocked how many times he also spoke, nay...emphasized, absolutely verifiables lies. I just don't understand how they think they can get away with outright lying on national TV [I reiterate my earlier comment - don't they understand that people check these things these days?]. In addition, he floated several other obvious misrepresentations (semi-truths spun into something more sinister).
And I'm not even talking about the usual "political spin" that all politicians including Obama impart on their messages. These were beyond spin.
The Democratic convention was filled with Democrats (okay, and I think one Republican) who besides building up their nominees tried to paint McCain as being a third Bush term, out of touch, wrong on issues, etc. [this was before the Palin announcement, so they focused on McCain]. They lamented the disaster that Bush had created in virtually every policy, both from wrong choices and from bad execution. And they said McCain was more of the same. NOTICE: All of this was focused on McCain's policies, choices, ideologies, and Bush's policies, choices, ideologies. None of it was personal attacks. In fact, virtually every time Obama and now Biden mention John McCain they praise his service. In other words, the guy isn't a bad guy, he's just wrong on all the issues and would be Bush III when it comes to policy (or possibly worse).
Flash forward to this week (or for that matter, any week). The Republican convention was filled with Republicans (okay, and one sort of semi partial mostly Independent Democrat) who besides building up their nominees tried to paint Obama/Biden as out of touch, elitist [I still laugh at this one], little experience, sweet talker, etc. That's expected. But then they take it to another level and just get mean and nasty. That's the part that I don't understand...and it's been a mainstay of the Republican party for the last several elections. In other words, it isn't "the guy isn't a bad guy, he's just wrong on all the issues and would lead us in the wrong direction." No, instead they have to paint him as being some sort of lower life form, someone who is unAmerican and possibly a closet extremist, someone who should be ridiculed because people are inspired by him, someone who has no substance (despite the more detailed plans on Obama's page than on McCain's for most issues), someone who is, essentially, nothing more than a media creation. Oh, and by the way, we're all better you if you're not a Republican.
When did we decide that being mean and attacking the "person" instead of the policy was somehow acceptable behavior for a politician?
That and 16 years in politics as a mayor and Governor (as well as a failed first run as Gov). You sort of left that out. Rather condescending if I do say which leads me to believe you highly biased, untruthful and scared. Typical liberal moonbats.
What she said only backs up who she is. That's what you libs don't get. People are going to relate to her -- she is a real, typical middle American.
Thanks to liberalism these past 50 years.
Point taken as you can barely read and write ;)
What that means to me is stripping the constitution away from half of the country.
Hmmm
Are you saying that there are no legitimate concerns with a McCain/Palin ticket that warrant discussion?
So, liberal thinkers don't have a right to be concerned about:
Gun Laws
Abortion Laws
Stem Cell Research
Euthanasia
Same Sex Couples
Affirmitive Action
Civil Rights
Environmental Responsibility
Health and Welfare Services
Unemployment
Drug Rehabilitation
Sex Education
Cultural Studies
Are you claiming that the conservative base is REALLY concerned about these very important issues?
There are also approximately 300 thousand towns out there with populations under 10,000 people that she was trying to reach as well I think. Undecideds or Independents just may see her as "one of thier own" per se with a shot at fixing DC, instead of more big city lawyer types....? I dunno'...
I guess we'll see how well she really did in the weeks to come.
Gun Laws - second amendment
Abortion Laws - impose time limits to three months
Stem Cell Research - no federal funding for embryo stem cells
Euthanasia - no.
Same Sex Couples - no problem, just don't try to redefine marriage.
Affirmitive Action - not needed.
Civil Rights - got 'em. check.
Environmental Responsibility - always.
Health and Welfare Services - got it. we don't need universal care
Unemployment - lowest under Bush
Drug Rehabilitation - put them in jail.
Sex Education - sure, why not?
Cultural Studies - what does this have to do with the President?
Then why use the word 'Highlight' in the title when the intention is to tear down the platform?
Abortion Laws - impose time limits to three months
The Republican platform calls for a Constitutional Ban. Palin opposes Abortion even in the cases of rape and incest.
Same Sex Couples - no problem, just don't try to redefine marriage.
Palin supports a Constitutional Ammended against allowing not just same-sex marriage, but civil unions, and it took the Alaska State Supreme Court to force her to grant legal rights to same-sex couples.
Civil Rights - got 'em. check.
Palin tried to fire a librarian who refused to censor books. Anyone who has worked under her that did not "support her" i.e. think exactly the way she does, gets fired.
Environmental Responsibility - always.
She wants to drill in ANWR, delist polar bears and beluga whales from the endangered species list because they interfer with oil and gas, and authorized the shooting of wolf pups while in the den in violation of her own State's laws.
Health and Welfare Services - got it. we don't need universal care
Unemployment - lowest under Bush
On what planet? Now you are just making up stuff as you go along. The unemployment rate was 4% in 2000. As of July, it is almost 6%.
Drug Rehabilitation - put them in jail.
Sure. I guess with everyone in jail we don't need to worry about unemployment.
Sex Education - sure, why not?
The Republican platform is abstinence only...a program that has led to an increase in the number of teen pregnancies
Cultural Studies - what does this have to do with the President?
For starters, if Bush had bothered to understand the culture of the Middle East, we might not still be there...
The speech was well written for her and took a few liberties with facts but that is to be expected at a convention.
If McCain wins, I certainly will be wanting him to survive his term!
And Don, I can't pity you. You've allowed yourself to be the way you are. Please, find it within you to carry yourself with the dignity and grace that God has instilled within us all.
Your personal attacks reveal much about your character. There is no need, my son, to insult the messenger. In time you may know this to be true. I will pray for you as it is the wish of our Lord and Saviour.
Peace be unto all who seek the truth and light.
Sincerely,
Aaron Henry
1. I'm spoken for.
2. Don't waste time trying to reason with Don. I'm not even sure why I do. It's his nature when presented with actual facts to engage in all sorts of strange, nonsensical arguments to deflect from reality.
Regarding Don, ya, you're more than right, and I know I'm aiming low when I do engage Don, but, hey, It's my first day here and I gotta stretch a bit and warm up with the easy targets before I hit something harder.
Don, your my little buddy FOR NOW...we're (I'm) gonna have some fun for a bit. OK?
Thanks again, Julie, and keep shining that light.
Aaron
Don, do you have the courage to admit you have ever been wrong about anything you may have posted here? When I say wrong, I mean being abusive towards your brothers and sisters here. First, we must make you a gentleman, Don. Then, when that is done, the transformation may begin. This is the threshold which you must pass. When you learn to be kind, like Jesus would have us to be, then you will know the truth and it SHALL SET YOU FREE!
Truly
Aaron Henry

Jesus was a community organizer...
Pontius Pilate was a governor.
Her children reach for her as she walks into the spotlight and turns away. Has anyone noticed that, and that's not new.
Now the polls say she has pushed John McCain up in the polls and no one has even heard her speak her own words......... Alot of Alaskans have including me, is anyone listening out there?
Joanne, I hope over the next month or two people really start to listen and see what this woman is all about. An unaccomplished power mad woman who got where she is by stepping on everyone that she could. Than when she gets to that next point she even steps on those that helped her to get there. It would do McCain good should he get elected to not eat any food or drink any drinks given to him by this woman without having a tester try them first.
A vote for McCain equals No universal health care.
A vote for McCain equals a continued collapsing economy.
A vote for McCain equals higher gas prices.
A vote for McCain equals no help for the housing market.
A vote for McCain equals a further erosion of woman’s rights.
A vote for McCain equals ideologue judges being placed throughout the country.
