Netherlands Lifts Pit Bull Ban

According to Animal Shelter magazine, the Netherlands has lifted its 15 year ban on the breeding or possession of pit bulls, after studies showed conclusively that Breed Specific Legislation (or BSL) does not work. Instead of reactionary measures like BSL, the Netherlands will instead concentrate on local leashing laws and education. Now if Denver could just get its head out of its rear on the issue!

Kudos to the Netherlands for figuring out that what they were doing didn't work and changing it. It seems I know of a government that would do well to learn this very same thing...

The city of Yakima is concidering lifting it's ban because of the vicous dog attacks of non pit bull dogs
I mean Duh Yakima, any dog can attack when not properly trained

I agree with you, Shannon, and not just about pit bulls. Punish the owner not the breed. I live in the country, but a farmer near me keeps his dog on a chain. I feel like stealing it everyday I drive by his yard. For goodness sakes, get a fence or take it inside.

I think steeper penalties for those who fight these animals and mistreat them also need to be imposed. The people who do that sort of thing make the animals vicious. If you raise a puppy and love it and treat it good the breed does not matter.

I don't think there's any such thing as a naturally bad dog - one of the biggest softies I ever knew was a 100-lb Doberman named Carmen. It has /everything/ to do with how they are raised and trained.

Well it is nice to see that one country is getting it right for a change. There is nothing wrong with that breed, ANY animal can be vicious if raised in a certain manner. I have had 2 friends that have raised pits and both of them were great, in fact the most dangerous thing about them was their gas.

The Netherlands lifted its ban. So just remember, not every place discriminates.
