This morning before departing Mexico for home we walked to Cahpultepec Castle, "the Hall of Montazuma."

It is the most important recreation and leisure space in the City.
Previously, this area was used by the Aztecs for pilgrimages, thus becoming a holy site for many of the prehispanic people in Mexico, but later fell prey to Hernán Cortez.
Then came the construction of the castle, which served as the official residence of the Emperor Maximilian of Hapsburg, and was later converted into the Heroíco Colegio Militar.

Among others, 13 young cadets were killed here at the hands of U.S. troops whilst defending Mexico's sovereignty over 150 years ago. These 'Niños Héroes,' child heroes, are celebrated here on a yearly basis.
Additionally, the castle served as home to several Mexican presidents, and now houses the National History Museum.

Once back at the hotel we boarded our private tour bus and headed through the city to the Mexican International Airport and our flight home.
