Have You Heard About "Crome"?

As early as today (2 September 2008), Google is releasing a beta of its new browser called "Crome".

Do you think this is a good move from Google?

Does the market need another browser option? or is this going to dilute market share more?

If you have a webpage, what browser(s) do you test? Do you have a compatibility option for different browsers or does everyone read the same codepage?

To answer one question, I test for IE6+, Firefox 2+, AOL9+, Opera7+ routinely. I code to avoid the need for a compatiblity check, though I have done a couple of custom pages for use in company intranet sites with this option.

When I was designing webpages, I mainly tested in IE and Netscape. I coded to comform to accessibility standards for the disabled or people with older browers. When a page I was working on didn't meet these standards (usually due to the client wanting it "jazzed-up"), I always provided a link to an alternate page that did conform to these standards. If I was going to design webpages now, I would definitely add FireFox to my test list.

using chome now, it loads pages pretty fast.

Good to know, Marty. I'm looking to put it on my next test machine load that doesn't have a specific browser requirement and see how it does. The custom java machine interests me against custom database applications.

Debra, when you have played with Crome, can you let me know what you think, please? You did the FireFox articles, and when I was at my parents' house I tried it with Vista. There were a couple issues with plug-ins, and I had to give myself permission to load a couple things, but overall I liked it better than IE. It loaded much faster and there were fewer errors. I haven't tried it with XP yet, though.

I have been trying to install it on my comp all day with no success. Went through every troubleshooting situation....I would really like to try it out and think it would streamline a lot of the internet work I do.

The only problem I've had with chrome so far is with viewing videos. Most play fine, but every once and while the entire page freezes.

Do you know the format of the videos with which you were having problems, George? Were they M$-based, Adobe-based, Real Player, Apple QuickTime? Was it using a built-in player or plug-ins? Thanks.

You're lucky William, yours still has chrome. Like my car, my computer bumpers are plastic. At least mine won't lose a browser, though. LOL

In the few days I've played with Chrome, it is a nice browser. Except, it doesn't seem to support JAVA very well.
