With all this Hurricane Gustav stuff going on, I wanted something to distract me. I figured what else but a crazy, loud action movie to do the trick? I went over the ratings for some of the movies playing at my local theater, and decided to check out Death Race. I'd already seen the original 70's movie a few months back and thought it might make for some mindless entertainment.
Basically, this movie is about prisoners racing battle cars for their freedom. The vehicle look like something out of mad max, and the whole thing plays out sort of like a video game. There's an evil jail warden overseeing the whole thing, and the hero of the story is played by Jason Statham. He was set up for murder just so the warden could get him in the races to help boost online viewing, which is a pay-per-view service.
Despite being full of plotholes and really just not making much sense, it still works pretty well as an action movie. This is pure mindless violence aimed at teenage boys, and it works very well on that level.
