I had just begun.
When I was Two,
I was nearly new.
When I was Three
I was hardly me.
When I was Four,
I was not much more.
When I was Five, I was just alive.
But now I am Six, I'm as clever as clever,
So I think I'll be six now for ever and ever."
Yesterday I could not help but think about the poem written by A.A. Milne in 1927 as I watched Julia celebrate her sixth birthday. The delightful rhyme...full of humor and understanding kept playing in my head. Lena and Paul, parents of Julia, well understand the needs of nurturing the imagination of their young daughter. The theme of the party was NOT Hannah Montana....nor did it take place in a bowling alley or a Chunky Cheese restaurant. Instead, it was a home party...one filled with activity and home-made props. The pond in August is the perfect setting for Julia, our very own water nymph, to host a Mermaid Party.
Throughout the previous week, Lena and the girls busied themselves making a paper mache fish pinata as well as filling "fish bags" for a treasure hunt. In the kitchen, Lena was busily preparing lasagna, meatballs, salads and a chicken and brocoli dish. Julia wanted a "mermaid" cake and so Lena, who has never lost the imagination of the very young, created a beautiful delicious centerpiece.
Come join the party and celebrate Julia's sixth birthday. As the guests arrived, clothing was discarded and down the pond they did go.

The kids had a blast swimming and playing games in the water.

These tubes were a hit.....and so was the big yellow ball.

After frolicking in the water for a good hour or so, it was time to eat and then go on a "fish hunt". Lena and Paul had hidden treasures all around the gardens for the children to find. Then it was time for the Pinata. Over the past week, Lena and the girls had constructed the fish from paper mache, construction paper, a balloon, and glue.

"Give it a good hit, Julia!"

Waiting for their turns.....
Up steps Jared......

And then Cam....who needs to think about it for a few moments.....

And then little Sage takes the stage.....

A few more hits and the loot falls out....a mad scramble ensues.....

Justin finds a balloon....

And Sage? First a horn......

And then a party blower.....

Now it's time for the cake....down to the pond we go.

oops, it's upside down.....let's turn it around....

Make a wish, Julia.....

Cake and ice cream, anyone?

"Sage, what are you doing?"
Bellies full, it's time to go upstairs to the living room for Julia to open her presents.

The boys are enchanted with the presents.....

After the "prize opening", it's back to the garden we go for a game of tag and then ball.

The day was filled with laughter and love...and one little girl was ever so happy because in her heart she knows that being six is a most remarkable age....for did not A.A. Milne write:
" But now I am Six, I'm as clever as clever,
So I think I'll be six now for ever and ever."

Happy Birthday, Julia......you are one clever girl!

Happy Birthday to Julia.
Homemade and homegrown..... how refreshing in this age of commercialization....
Beautiful ..and such a clever idea for a little mermaid's birthday party......... I know she will remember this party all the days of her life.
Julia had just the "bestest" of times as well as her wee guests and their folks. Last week the girls kept me "updated" on the progress of the pinata fish....and the morning of the party Lena had to do some "touchup" work on the mermaid cake because Sage's little fingers couldn't resist putting her hands in the frosting.
The food was delicious too...lasagna most tasty, scrumtious meatballs and the chicken-broccoli and cheese just melted in your mouth.
Julia really felt "special for the day"!
Turning 6 and entering first grade last week were two really special occasions for Jules. What a week she had!

Happy Birthday, Julia.
The past several days with the beautiful weather and the temps in the 70's and 80's have been wonderful for the pond...one can still swim without freezin' your tail off. Kids in water make for happy kids!
Yes, you did meet Lena, Paul, Julia and Sage at the Memorial Service. I was thinking about the fact that last week-end we were celebrating the life of a woman of 91 and the following Saturday we were celebrating Julia's sixth birthday. The Circle of Life, I would say.
With all the sugar that was consumed, it was a good thing to have all that activity to "run it off".
Thanks for stopping by. Wouldn't it be fun to go back for just a day and be six all over again.
We did have a delightful time...the kids were happy, smiles all around, the food was delicious and the friendships warm. What better time could one have.
your photos are all soo delightful... Happy Birthday Julia...
Those that bring joy to others, experience the joy themselves.
EE-Bob, you are one of those blessed people who see, and act, and accomplish all this.
What a lovely day everyone had, you had magic!!!!!
And were kind enough to share it with all of us, your cyber-fam.
Blessed be, EE, you are one in a million.
Wilka
I bow to you.
They do grow up....who would have ever thought my oldest would be 37 or "my baby" 25? I remember in the late 60's "we didn't trust anyone over 30". Now I am double that plus two. How did that happen?
Although we did not come by grandchildren legitimately...as yet, none from either Will or Zach, Papa and I were ready and so we went out and found Julia and Sage, they are as much our own as those that carry our genes...and to top it off, we got a daughter (never had one of those) and a son-in-law. What more could be better!
This was a delightful photo essay, Bob. (Parents do Chuckie Cheese parties because it's easier. Yes it is and I have even been guilty of such in the past.)
PS - I remember being six. I thought I could do anything I put my mind to - well, I still do. But I distinctly remember wanting to do and try so many things.
Perfect article!
DE-LISH!
The party was a wonderful ending to "summertime". I loved the "pumpkin" part of the Mermaid cake. As for the food....Lena sure can bake!
Lena and Paul planned and executed the whole party. Like Charlotte in Charlotte's web, Lena is most versatile. Unbelievable what she can create...she would make a great Early Childhood teacher.

They did have a wonderful time. And of course the adults did too!
Very nice, Bob and Bill.
Lena made the cake...all from her imagination!
