Orchids are considered the most mysterious and exotic flowers in the world and yet they are some of the easiest to grow. In some areas, like here, they grow in the wild.
There are many varieties or families and many different types within each of the families. All colors, all shapes, all sizes...
There is a place called Akatsuka Nurseries located on the way between Hilo and the Hawai'i National Volcanoes Park where I like to take any one who visits us for the first time. Whether we/they buy any plants or not, the visit alone is a rechaging of my 'sensory' batteries each time as we walk through their displays in the showroom and nursery.
The following photos were all taken by me at either our yard, a friend's house ot at Akatsuka Nurseries. Enjoy!

Purple and Lavender Oncidium - we bought a pot of these recently at the Church Bazaar. It has 6 blooms on the plant. I will be tranplanting this into a big blue and white Chinese porcelain container mixed in with other similar orchids in the same pot after they finish blooming.
Rust brown and yellow spray - growing on one of the trees that separate our yard from the neighbors, right by our driveway.

Green Catleya grown by my friend Sue.

Yellow Mini-Bells at Akatsuka Nursery. My sister helped me with the oval cropping when she was teaching me how to use PhotoShop and I have forgotten how to do it since!!! ;-)

Yellow and Cream spray - not sure of what variety - this was taken at Akatsuka Nursery but we bought a pot of this type at the Church Bazaar.

Purple and lavender Catleya, also at Akatsuka

I believe these are Red Vandas. From our yard

Not sure what family this one belongs to

Rust red and yellow Cymbidium spray, also taken at Akatsuka

Green and purple Cymbidium - Taken at a neighbor's house

Purple Cymbidium - from our yard

Bearded Yellow & Brown Cymbidums from our yard

Those just may be the most beautiful flower photos that I have ever seen. So bright and colorful.
Connie, we love orchids...but I love all flowers ;-)))
Thanks!
Madame, you shall be taken to Akatsuka when you visit next....your first visit was not long enough....
My friend Jackie is good with Orchids and I'm seriously thinking about getting a couple of them for myself - maybe next year. I have a nun orchid, the first orchid to survive with me.
Orchids are special.... and I love it that there are so many different ones. You certainly can't get tired of them!
I remember visiting the orchid house at the Atlanta Botanical Gardens. That was the most orchids and the most diversity I have ever seen. You are so lucky to have so many beautiful flowers in your tropical climate.
Rachel, these are some of the perks....... LOL
Here we have several in Hilo every year. There is the yearly Orchid Show, the Bonsai Show, the Palm Society shows, ...and once a year there is also a huge show at the local (indoor) tennis stadium where nurseries come to display their goodies..... It is an amazing show....with every type plant and flower you can imagine growing in a tropical clime....
I love attending them all.
