SPECULATIONS ABOUT SARAH PALIN - I HOPE I AM WRONG

I share your fears. She is not ready to lead this country, and I can imagine what McCain must be thinking in choosing her.

Gibbs,I have to agree with you. Believe me,I have two children (one with Aspergers) and work full time,so I know a little about trying to balance work and family. I can't imagine for the life of me why she would put herself in this position unless it's for her need for power.

My complaint isn't with her so much as with McCain for demonstrating an alarming lapse of judgment in thinking she would be suitable.

Back to your concern though, gibbs. I don't run around selling myself as a devoted wife and mother. But when someone else who has five children with one of them a special needs baby born only this last April and she says she is a devoted wife and mother at the same time she is telling me she is running for VP of the most powerful nation in the world, I say, "Oh, really? How does that work?"

I know in my own life I have had to say no to wonderful opportunities that had I been in different family circumstances I would have jumped at. The timing wasn't right. I knew I couldn't have it all in those situations and if torn between by kids and my work, my kids will win.

So, yes, it seems to be pandering. More of the fairy tale, hockey mom to VP. Poof.

What about the Clintons and Chelsea?

Obama had the good sense not to nominate Chelsea.

So what happens if one or more of her children are sick or in an accident? What will be her priorities? And if during a time of family crisis as well as a domestic or international crisis to whom or what will she assign her priorities?

Well, if any of her children get sick, wouldn't she straddle her broomstick and go tend to them in Alaska?

I mean Joe Biden put his kids first and was home for them every night, so she would have him as an excellent example.

Given the record number of Republicans who have left their political positions over the last eight years because they suddenly realized they needed to spend more time with their families, I'd say she is a very risky candidate. Of course, there are many other reasons not to consider her or McCain.

Tom Ridge resigned because "he needs a private sector job in order to afford to send his two children to college."

Karen Hughes, Ari Fleisher, Christine Todd Whitman, Administrator, Environmental Protection Agency, Rosario Marin, Treasury Department, and Peter Fisher, Undersecretary, Treasury Department, all left their positions because they wanted to spend more time with their families.

Janet Rehnquist resigned as inspector general of the Health and Human Services Department after a controversial tenure and while Congress investigated, among other things, her decision to delay an audit of Florida's pension fund at the request of Governor Jeb Bush's office. She cited wanting to spend more time with her family as the reason for her resignation also.

Okay. Sounds like a bunch of naysayers here. Here is my take.

Sounds like all of you are concerned about her family obligations, but what if he were a man. Of course, you wouldn't be sounding off about his family obligations. I have read alot about Sarah and her husband and I am sure that as a family, the are perfectly capable of managing their private affairs just like every other family who has a member that has chosen public service. In fact, some might argue that taking this job may provide resources for them that might have not been accessible. So lets stick to the non personal issue less we create new requirements for women who desire a high powered career.

I think McCain's pick is awesome. McCain needed someone who is strongly conservative like Sarah to solidify the Republican base. Those of us who believe in ideology first, would agree she is what best represents our desires. Second, she is a outsider and reformer and is not afraid to take on her own party or cut across the aisle to make things possible (without compromising her principles). Third, I think McCain likes her and apparently can work with her. Fourth, she has much more executive experience than Obama and she is the VP. Don't talk about age either because your Mr Obama is only 2 years older than her. Fifth, mark my words, the country is going to love this woman. No matter what any of you say, Obama and McCain were neck and neck and once they get to know Governor Palin, McCain will get the boost he needs to win this election.

I don't think it is a gimmick which is apparently what some of you are saying. This was bound to happen if McCain chose ANY woman. Truth is, none of us really know why he chose her. So let's just give the gal a chance. You may end up liking her.

Julia, it works if you have tons of money and influence, and other people will be taking care of your children, including the special needs child that you so bravely and morally chose not to abort. I am happy to have people in the Whitehouse who understand the needs of children, special needs children, and working parents. That said, I do wonder when Governor Palin has had time in her busy career life to really understand these needs and issues. She seems to cash in on her beauty queen skills of looking good, poised, alert and pleasing on camera. She's got that play to the judge thing going very well. I heard she had ambitions to be a national sportscaster. She obviously enjoys public speaking, and knows how to work a crowd.

I'm afraid this is just way off base in my opinion. I honestly don't think her having 5 kids, including the infant with Downs Syndrome, is relevant at all. Lots of professional women, including those in politics, have children, even young children. Obama has two young children. I'm surprised this topic even came up.

Personally, there are a lot of legitimate reasons to think this was a dangerous choice. To me it reinforces my already held opinion that he has incredibly poor judgment. The fact that his pick for VP - especially given the higher than normal probability that the VP will be called in to take over because of his age and health history - was made purely on political calculation instead of on thoughtful consideration of governing this country is astounding.

That's all well and good *n*k*, that is the way the world goes round, but I suppose it all turns on how one defines that word "devoted." Clark Kent has a wonderful comment on another post dissing (discussing) Palin in which he points out, quite accurately, that it seems for many in the conservative audience, they don't probe with their analysis. It is all lip service. As long as you say you are thus, it doesn't matter what you really are.

Seriously. How can a "devoted" mother of a five month old special needs child be there for the child, the campaign and then the job assuming the unthinkable should happen and Bush be re-elected?

I think an honest person would have left the appearance of personally doting out of the speech. It has to be misleading. It is a matter of right words with no regard for the reality behind the story.

And, did you catch McCain's introductory speech -- one would have thought he wasn't the one in power voting right along with everything Bush wanted when he talks empty words about wanting change.

Compared to Obama ..it is impossible...from education, to experience, to leadership, to planning, to strategic knowledge of internationall affairs, to abilities to manage.

It is an idiotic choice, she is not ready to be president if he drops dead, and I do not think she is got what it takes to even be presidental material...just like McCain...more of the same.
I am not even sure why we are discussing this...it is plain as the sun...

But that's the point, Julia. The problem is not that a mother of five is running for office. A mother of any number of children has as much right to run for office (or take any kind of job she likes) as the father of those children. But that's my liberal stance. It's the conservatives who say "family values" mean that families should consist of one man, the breadwinner and spiritual leader, one woman, who should stay at home and mind the children or else society falls apart, and as many children as God will give. The problem is, in other words, the contradiction between the action and the words; and even more, the fact that based on this fantasist ideology, they would force women who don't have the kinds of resources they have into impossible life situations by denying them reproductive choice, a social safety net, anti-discrimination protections, etc.

Regardless of her family (which should be just find if she is elected Vice President), is there any Republican who believes that she is the best qualified Republican to be President of the United States? Is she really the best person McCain could find?

Is this the best that McCain could do? If I were a Republican I would be horrified by what this choice says about McCain.

The 'devoted mother' issue is not whether she has the right to be Vice President and a mother. It is her grandiosity that it is possible for her to do justice to all that she is dedicating herself too. The more I think about it the more this woman and John McCain appear to be absolutely selfish and hardly committed to what is in the best interests of the United States.

Dame Ruth, I thought pro-choice was about choice? I thought Planned Parenthood was about planning parenthood? Clearly Gov. Palin wants these children, so why would she have used contraception? Or is it simply that pro-choicers really believe that reproductive rights should have a cap? That a woman should be limited in the number of children she has? China does it, why not us, right?

I always find it cute that Democrats attempt to describe the Republican position on a matter and completely botch it. And..."droves"? Right...that's why only 1/3 of the electorate is Republican, while the Democrats occupy nearly half, yet McCain and Obama are almost tied in all the polls.

The Anchorage Daily News is reporting that many of Palin's local colleagues, even Republican, were rather stunned by her being chosen as McCain's vice president.

State Senate President Lyda Green said she thought it was a joke when someone called her at 6 a.m. to give her the news.


"She's not prepared to be governor. How can she be prepared to be vice president or president?" said Green, a Republican from Palin's hometown of Wasilla. "Look at what she's done to this state. What would she do to the nation?"

Well, those corrupt officials. whom she threw out, and their families are really having a hay-day!

gibbs, everybody knows that Lyda Green has loathed Sarah Palin her entire political career. I bet it's jealousy. I mean, Ms. Green probably wishes she could go from PTA mom to US VP in a matter of a few years.

There are bad feelings between those two ladies, Palin and Green. I wouldn't expect Green to praise her. I don't think you can be in politics and have everybody like you. You're bound to make enemies along the way.

I am somewhat alarmed by a radio show where Palin sat by laughing while the DJ referred to Green as a bitch and a cancer. And made references to her weight. Green is a cancer survivor. I think it would have more professional for Palin to have said something to the DJ that she didn't approve of name calling like that.

I think it is odd that Palin would chose to conceive a fifth child while serving as Governor. Isn't governing a state, even one with a tiny population like Alaska, supposed to be a hard job? what if her pregnancy had had complications? I agree with the pro palin people on this thread that she has the right to make her own decisions on childbearing and contraception. but I think it valid to question her judgement on the choice she made. I am NOT referring to her carrying a down syndrome baby to term- that was fine. But why let yourself get pregnant while serving as governor in the first place?

I believe that is true for some, and others were forced out and told to lie. Honesty and transparency are not things the Republican Party seems too concerned with. If you followed the link, I heard from one person on that list who was forced out.

I am a mother of 3 children.

I raised all of my children. No nanny and half the time as a single parent. When you have children you make sacrifices for them. It doesnt appear that either of these parents want to change their lifestyle to include their children.

Historically the care of children falls on the woman. Pointing this out is not being anti feminism it is being realistic.

Now if Nancy's husband wants to assume kid responsiblites fine let her work and him stay home with the kids.

Just a couple of things.

I have to agree with you on this one. When I had my newborns, I was pretty much stuck in the house for a couple of years and I only had two to deal with. Even now that my kids are nearly teens, my biggest priority is raising them and I have very little time to concentrate on a career. Raising a child with Down's Syndrone is going to be especially challenging. I think she's an incredible woman, and very attractive and fresh, but all the same, I don't like any person, man or woman, who forces everyone else to accept their religious values.

Lori, McCain only thinks that some women will vote for the woman b/c of her gender because some women will vote for the woman b/c of her gender. McCain isn't delusional; he knows that some Hillary women feel disenfranchised and want to stick it to the Dems, and a woman for VP makes swinging to the GOP a whole lot easier this time around. Also, there are independent women who haven't decided yet who DO like the idea of a woman in the White House. Like it or not, there ARE women like that; it is UNDENIABLE. Some people vote on religious lines, some on ethnic lines, some on abortion lines, some on gender lines. I don't think that voting for a woman just because she is a woman is commendable, but I can't say that I wouldn't be tempted to do it if I were a woman. Well some women think a higher priority is getting a woman in the White House. Who's to tell them that their vision for America is wrong? Maybe it would bring amazing side-effects we haven't thought of yet! It sure would tick off the Arab nations, though; they've already had to deal with Condi, and they probably hated that.

The word "appealing" has more than one meaning, Lori. Get off it.

Gov. Palin stood up against the Alaska Republican establishment (which is why Lyda Green hates her so), including Ted Stevens, noted as perhaps the most prominent politician in Alaska history. She brought ethics reform to Alaska, and she raised taxes on oil companies so each resident will soon be getting a $1,200 check in the mail. Her husband works part-time for BP, so I think it took guts for her to sign a bill that would not be popular with oil companies. She also vetoed legislation that would have limited gay couples' rights in hospitals on the grounds that it was unconstitutional, and that the legislature would need to change the state constitution for it to be signed. All of these decisions received special interest and Republican opposition, as well as Democrat opposition. She blazes her own trail.

Anybody who considers Obama more attractive than Palin needs a thorough CAT scan.

Sandy- on the subject of female rights over their own bodies- yes, well said. I will respect Palin's right to conceive and birth a baby while Governor when she respects the rights of other women to make decsions regarding THEIR bodies- but not until then.

TJ- wow, sex is a great stress reducer for people who do not happen to believe in birth control. That's a great description of the source of most abortions right there. While I think that abortions for the first trimester should be legal, I dislike the irresponsible attitudes- such as the one you voice- that give rise to abortions. Birth control is the best solution. When we ignore the need to use forethought in sex, abortion is one result. Children that we can't pay for is another.

Talk about "Family Values". Palin has spent the past 3 years, (That just about sums up her entire political career) embroiled in fight to get her sister's former husband fired from his job as a state trooper, which will certainly harm her sisters kids (there's a gaggle of them) because then he won't be able to pay child support, either to her, nor will he be able to contribute to the support of his current girl friend and her kids.

Even the judge in this case said Palin and her family seemed to be motivated by revenge, than "good judgment". So Palin has never much been interested in childrens welfare. And if she's not interested in her own families kids, why would she be interested in the welfare of all the children in our nation?

As I suspected the more facts are revealed by this apparently none vetted VP choice the picture of her as this attractive, wholesome, integrated and balanced woman is far from the whole picture.

She appears to be every bit as vicious as her Presidential running mate. She has no problem laughing at personal nasty attacks on her opponents. She has the nickname of "Barracuda". She has a compulsive need to crush her

Chris, I would prefer that a couple use birth control instead of abortion, however it is my personal conviction that birth control should not be used to limit the number of children you have unless there is a serious health risk involved. That is a personal choice, and I do not look down on those who use it. I understand the motivations behind it, and often the parents simply do not feel capable of raising another child at that point (or ever again). People like me who are against birth control for personal use are not the same people who have abortions, because my school of thought holds that we should gladly take and raise every child God sees fit to give to us. Why would somebody like that have an abortion?

Cynthia, "even the judge"? You make it sound like judges are known for being impartial. You obviously don't know the whole story, or you simply don't think what Wooten did is an issue, in which case I would question your capacity to sympathize. Wooten used his taser on his 11-year-old stepson, which is an illegal, unofficial use of the weapon. He has also threatened to kill the governor and her father, among other unspecified family members (presumably also his ex-wife). I think it took some restraint for Gov. Palin not to send over the Alaska National Guard to his house to beat the crap out of him. Using a taser on a stepchild is unacceptable, and threatening to kill the governor usually brings significant jail time. If anything, Palin failed to bring the fullest extent of the law against Wooten--which is merciful.

Child support? If this man is even paying (which based on his character and ability to be a man, we cannot be so sure he is), I doubt Gov. Palin's sister would be out on the street if he stopped. Gov. Palin is more than able to provide for her sister's family, and I am sure she would, especially if she cares enough about her sister to bring an investigation on herself trying to protect her. That shows what family really means to her--you're right: this does all go back to family values, and Sarah Palin has proved that she cares deeply for hers.

TJ- we will reach the milestone of having 7 billion humans in a couple years. You may not think it valid for human couples to limit the size of their families through birth control- and the Catholic Pope is on your side. But in the real world, birth control is going to keep civilization from collapsing, if we are lucky. If everyone shared your view, and possessed the normal human lack of self control in the heat of passion, we would end up eating each other when the food supply ran out.

Chris, the funny thing about more mouths to feed is there are also more hands to work. Scientists estimate that this world has the resources to accommodate a population of between a 50 billion to 1000 billion. Of course we don't have the manpower to provide for that many people now, but when we have a greater population we have a greater workforce. Your point of view would be like people in 1600 saying that they should use birth control because the world will never be able to sustain 7 billion people, which is obviously false.

TJ- that is nonsense, our planet lacks the resouces to accomodate a population of 50 billion. Many of the earth's resources are fully engaged right now to provide survival to only 7 billion. Every major fishery is fully exploited or overexploited. Our easily accessible fossil fuel resources are failing to keep up with the expectations of a growing global middle class, all of whom want to have a car. When we reach 10 billion in a few more decades, it will be a struggle to prevent a massive wave of species extinctions due to the destruction of tropical forests for wood and agricultural land- in fact that has been playing out for decades already.

The titanic ignorance of Sarah Palin and persons such as yourself on the subject of the unsustainable trajectory of future human existence would be laughable if it were less widespread and if it did not represent a deadly threat to the survival of my great grandchildren. I call it Dominionism- the notion that God is in charge and that science therefore does not really matter, that God put the earth's resouces here for the human race to rape at will, that he has guaranteed that those resouces will never run out no matter how foolishly we overexploit them. Future generations will marvel that this mode of thought ever existed, while they struggle to overcome its legacy in their blighted lives.

Missing is the need for and increasing scarcity of fresh water Thirty years from now, the competition for fresh water is going to make the current competition for oil seem like a childs game.

How can McCain in all his splendor even entertain the idea that Palin is suitable for the second highest office in the country or to take over as President if something happens to him? This is all part of George W. If this story along with the new information about trooper gate continues (that there are potentially incriminating e mails surfacing) the nomination moment in the next two days is going to be a doozy. John McCane is going to be under inordinate pressure as is the puppet Republicans all walking lock step, mouthing exactly the same inane drivel about the brilliant choice that McCane has made.

My wife - who hates me talking about Obama in a positive way - said she thinks that McCane really doesn't have his heart in running. He looks tired and probably would like to be resting in a hammock in Hawaii. I agree.

Where oh where is Sarah Palin. Obviously the Republicans have hidden her away until tomorrow night when this fresh maverick can maverick herself on stage and show us all how a gun slinging Annie Get Your Gun (most likely to be used in her daughter's shot gun marriage) will maverick us heathen Democrats till we are all enlightened by her down home normally dysfucntional famial God fearing, God Bless America, my dear friends maverick ways.

No one here knows any nice upstanding family who had a teenager become pregnant? Teenagers tend to do what they want no matter what they are taught. If Obama's daughters were old enough and one got pregnant it wouldn't be a problem because he would just suggest an abortion. He already said he wouldn't make them pay for their mistakes by carrying a baby. Both Obama and his wife have prominent jobs...I don't see either one of them staying home and taking care of the children. They might not be babies but they are really young. What happens if one of his kids gets sick or something terrible happens.....just because he is the father and not the mother it isn't going to affect him?

Sarah Palin is such a warm and loving mother that she would selflessly sacrifice the precious formative years of their lives to make America a better place.

Oh wait, she won't have to. She just needs to give a speech tonight, rouse the rabble and go home.

Sarah's children are grown except for 2, her husband is a loving dad who knows how to take care of the kids too. And she's just running for VP. In the end we're voting for the lesser of 2 evils, and Obama is someone I just can't trust.

Elizabeth, do you know how ridiculous "just running for VP" sounds? Personally, I'm not all that interested in Palin's personal life - except as it translates to the national stage - but I do think that the job of Vice President is an extremely difficult, demanding and important one. It is also a job that includes taking over as president if and when necessary. If McCain has so much as a colonoscopy, she would be in charge.

That's where (and only where) comparisons to Sen. Obama are plausible.

I myself have worries about each side. I have watched all the debates and listened to all the programs Palin, McCain, Biden and Obama and every single one of them is backslidiong from what they first spoke about at the beginning of the race. I just pray that the right man is elected and lives up to some of his promises. Of course we need change because the economy is the worst I have ever seen it in my lifetime.

my thoughts: I believe that all working women (not just those running for president) have chased after the seductive fantasy of "having it all". I work part time FROM HOME and am continually realizing that each moment I am trying to work --- I am ultimately taking away from my family who often need me when a client is beckoning. Hardly any working women can actually say that their family comes first no matter what. BUT, society tells us that it is a woman's right to have babies and work, so why are we being so hard on Palin? If she were elected Vice President, she would have resources to be able to provide for all of her kids (like special needs help, tutors, private schools, etc...) that most "normal" working women don't have --- yet they work and "forsake" their children? No, most normal working women are praised and touted as hardworking and ambitious.

If Obama had an infant with down's syndrome and he and his wife both worked full time --- he wouldn't be seen as less of a nurturing father fo running for president. I just think dogging on Palin is a double standard.
