I want to join the Gather Book Club because reading is a gateway to understanding. When I read a book alone, I enter the time period, the place and the minds of the characters in the books. I experience their pain & triumph, I am transported to their physical worlds, I empathize with their dreams and predicaments, I learn from their actions and decisions.
When I then share those experiences with others in a Book Group (and I belong to a couple, neither of which are virtual), I am shown not just what perspectives and emotions I share with the others in the group while reading the book, my experiences and understanding are exponentially increased by sharing perspectives and emotions that others have had while reading the book that I did not have. Sometimes, it's from the simple fact that I missed noticing or appreciating an aspect of the story or character in it that someone else brought to light for me. Sometimes, it's seeing an aspect of the book from someone else's personal perspective, based on their life experiences, that can be the most important gift I am given by the group. The more diverse a book discussion group is - in age, in race, in education, in life experience, in anything - the better the discussion and the richer the experience of the book for everyone.
That's why I love to participate in book discussions. And am looking forward to participating on Gather as well. Thanks for this opportunity!
I thoroughly enjoyed it and was grateful to Linda K for suggesting it as an addition to my reading list.
I have a hard time finding people to discuss books with, so this would be really fun!
I love to read and used to read all the time, and would really love to start reading again. I think it would be interesting to be able to read the book and then share my thoughts and see what others thought as well!
Aside from that, a book club experience offers one to see deeper into the novels read while the members exchange passages and moments that touched and affected them.
I've also been DYING to read Water For Elephants for months, now. I've had a plot swimming in my head about the circus that made this book a research (despite it being fictional) and personal must read. I had a copy of it this spring months ago, read the first chapter, then sadly realized that I would have to return it unread due to a family vacation. There's a huge waiting line to request it again. :(
One of the greatest things about the reviews sponsored by the publishers here is that we get to share how we feel about the book. (It isn't just a dry review, trying to get others to read it) I am always amazed when I read them by all of the different viewpoints.
I have always wanted to take part in a book group, but well, I don't get out much. This is such a great chance to take part and I am excited!
As to Water for Elephants, who can't be intrigued by a story of a man looking back at his years in a second rate circus? Haven't we all wondered what it was like being in a circus , traveling from city to city, putting on shows in backwater towns only to break it down again and move to the next town? We romanticize it as children, but I think that in reality, it was no picnic.
I have been trying to read more after a year of slacking and playing video games for too many hours. Joining a book club would be a great motivator for me and give me a reading goal. Finishing "Superdove" and writing a review was a good kick in butt to get me back into the swing of carrying a book along and reading while I wait in lines or for appointments. I'm almost halfway through the Doctor Who story I'm reading and would be happy to have a copy of "Water for Elephants" ready to dive into.
Thank you for your consideration.
I think this has enormous potential since you get such a wide group of people here! It will be interesting to see all of the different opinions expressed.
I discovered Water For Elephants just by chance earlier this summer while visiting (working in) Baxter, MN. Interesting title... I read the jacket, skimmed a few pages of someone else's copy, and being drawn to historical novels I was intrigued, but hadn't yet picked up a copy myself.
Reading a few of the postings here has struck a chord with me. Locating a forum for a specific title in the offline world and finding the time to schedule discussions can be a challenge. Family, work, and travel schedules conspire against making these connections.
That being said, I'm looking forward to investing time with this group. I'm relatively new to Gather and online social networking itself; so I'm grateful for the opportunity to participate in the coming discussions. Thanks Stephanie and thank you Gather Partner Team!
I would like this book if you have any left over.
I am a member of books.gather.com
I assume that is the book club to which you are referring.
Discussing books is nearly as much fun as reading them! I would love to join a book club on Gather.
It will be interesting to see if this one can go the distance.
I've been an avid reader my whole life and usually have 2 or 3 books going at a time.
And Water for the Elephants sounds like a great place to start!
I'm currently a communications student and I might be able to help contribute some interesting or analytical and historical perspectives to the group discussions.
Please count me in.
I want to join a book club because I always want to talk about whatever book I'm reading, but it's hard to find someone who wants to talk about it with me unless they also read that book.
And I want to join this book club in particular because I can participate when its convenient for me. I haven't joined other book clubs because they always involve driving somewhere.
Happy to be a member!
BTW
This book is fantastic so far and many times I've laughed out loud and my husband looked over at me like I'm crazy until I would show him the part and he would crack up too. It's FANTASTIC!!
