Thanks to Gather.com and my Borders gift card that I earned, one of the books I used it to buy was The Religion by Tim Willocks. It's an epic historical fiction novel about a man caught up in the middle of the Crusades and trying to rescue a young boy for a friend.
Although this book is very gory and long, it is an entertaining read from beginning to end. The main character was kidnapped by Muslims at a young age, then escaped and grew up among Christians as he got older. He has seen the worst of both sides of the Crusade, which gives him a unique perspective on the situation. In many ways, you might compare the rescue story to Saving Private Ryan.
