The Commemorative Air Force B-17 flying museum dubbed "Sentimental Journey," which recently stopped over for a few days at Mt Vernon (IL) Outland Airport, is now at St Louis Regional Airport in Madison County.
The bomber, one of only ten still flying 60-some-odd years after their numbers filled the skies over Germany, is open for tours. Tours run $5. For $425, you can take a flight, provided they can book something like six passengers. Wish I had the money I could spend on something like that because I'd sure like a flight in this old bomber.
The Sentimental Journey will be at the Bethalto airport through Thursday. Besides touring the aircraft, there will be souvenir booklets, B-17 pins (I've got one I use as a tie-tack), and other items available for sale.
The Commemorative Air Force, formerly the Confederate Air Force, has as its mission the preservation of these old warbirds in wings located at airports around the United States.
The B-17 was legendary for its ruggedness and durability in combat. It was the backbone of the bombing effort over Europe, fighting its way through the Luftwaffe to its target and back.
