Greetings Gatherers,
I am excited to announce we will be conducting a site upgrade at 11:00 pm ET Tuesday August 26, 2008. The site will be unavailable for approximately 4 hours. Please be sure to complete any publishing activity prior to this time. Check back after 3:00 am ET on Wednesday to log in and start your day on Gather.
With this upgrade we will help you more easily keep track of the content by your friends on Gather. It will be easier to use others' comments as guideposts to interesting things on the site. And you can keep track of the social activities of the people you care about as well.
Here are a few specific improvements:
The MyGather page will be updated to separate content-focused and social-focused areas. This will let you keep track of friend, group, and topical content more easily.
Gather Picks and Gather Essential links will be moved to more prominent placement on the Groups and Explore landing pages. This will help readers find more of the great authors on the site.
A significant new points redemption option will be announced.
We will add "geotags" for photos. This will let you label your images with the place where the photos were taken.

This I gotta see, especially with everyone uploading pictures out the whazoo during this Summer Pics Promo. I'm just going to guess, right now, that it'll take a lot longer to earn as many points necessary for the cash option.
Is that like stalking? Is stalking allowed in the TOS? Just curious.
It will even harder to navigate now. More clicks to make.
I'm so glad the Gather picks and Essentials are back up at the top of the page (or will be). I have to say I've hardly looked at them at all since the change putting them at the bottom of the page.
Separating out the pings, status changes etc is a BIG bonus to me. I just don't care about those so glad they will be gone from my activities' listing. I'll try to blank them out of my vision completely!
And for once, the down time is when I'll be gone anyway! Hooray! (After the morning I've had, I get excited about small things.)
I really do like the idea of the paypal option.. and a few other changes you guys are making..

Or do you mean this is now part of points options? G/C's and paypal? I dont understand.
Non-cash option people can cash out for money at $25, $50, and $100 amounts, to paypal.
People on Cash Option can cash out for a check or paypal at any amount.

As for the upgrade, do what you want. The cafe closers at 11 PM, and I don't have access after that hour anyway. LOL
I may be the ONLY PERSON on here for whom your timing is convenient. tehehe No more all-night Gathering sessions, now that I don't have the internet at home now. LOL
Now, were I still in AZ, I'd be complaining, because it would only be 8 PM there, and WE DO have the internet at home in AZ. LOL
sounds like good changes.
Much cleaner look and the separation of content and social is the main biggie change for me..... Liked that VERY much!
Also liked the geotags option.....It is going to be wonderful!

Lots of luck with this. I'll bet I'll be lost for a couple of days, but I'm a tough old woman.
Are we, by any chance, getting the email tabs back that used to be in the upper right hand corner of every screen? They used to be the only wrap around when you are going from emails to the article and back. Now we have to go back to our My Gather screens and it's just ridiculous. I emailed you about this days after the last upgrade and haven't gotten an answer. Why these were taken away is beyond my comprehension.
I am hoping that THIS upgrade just isn't for adding more flashing banner ads!

But I think you should have some ad on the side of the apges about ESSENTIALS and Gather picks on each page - otherwise people will NEVER FIND THEM.
Also, how are Gather picks determined? How many will there be a day? I found 13.
Still would VERY much like to be able to have my groups classified in categories, so I only have to click once to publish my writing articles to writing groups, my photos to photo groups, my food articles to food groups, etc. That would save hours of time!
Love the idea of the Paypal option. Just cashed in my $50.00 Omaha Steaks certificate, but it seems not really as useful as $50.00 in cash! Thanks for listening and trying to fix some of the more important facets, Tom and team.
