The Heart of Love - Writin' Wombats CXCVI

August 24, 2008 12:56 PM EDT
views: 433 | rating: 10/10 (4 votes) | comments: 312

'Their eyes met across a crowded room.'  This is about as cliche' as it gets when writing love as it gets. Love at first sight.  I know it happens and outside of seeing your child for the first time it is exceedingly rare. Perhaps it's why so many writers have taken up the cause. Bringing fantasy to life.

One doesn't have to write romance to face love in a plot. All relationships involve attachment of one kind or another. Friendship, parent, cousin, brother, sister, friend, collegue to list a few. Most of these the attachment is implied. The attachment can also be twisted to create suspense or leave the reader questioning it to spring a surprise.

Will the hero save his wayward brother or let him dangle for his bad behavior?

Will the female lead believe her cousin has changed and chance being lead into danger for the loyalty of family?

How is it anyone could trust Uncle Frank when it is so obvious he's a putz?

**************

I write romance, so my story lines revolve around two people falling in love and navigating the mine field that can be love. I don't like writing or reading love at first at first sight. Lust at first sight is more likely the situation. Love takes time because trust and respect are required for a long term 'Happily ever after.'

**************

So how do you write relationships in your work?

How do they color your work and effect the rhythm and flow?

Are there elements of romance in your crime story?

What is the heart of love?

The poem is the relationship.
Umm, mauve?, blue? Some Bon Jovi or Led Zepplin for rhythm maybe.
The only crime is the one my poem does upon the readers senses.

The heart of love is understanding.

Alistair McClain stated proudly that he didn't include females in his writings, and his thrillers were best sellers and were filmed. Nevertheless I believe that romance and love should appear in any kind of literature, and I don't think I have to explain why - it's quite clear to anyone of us.

I thought you'd sponsor a how-to-write-biochemistry-labs-that-don't-make-students-eyes-glaze-over thread, but NOOOOOOO, you chose "love". Perhaps later, when I slip out of my science-induced coma, I'll be able to think about love in fiction. And yes, some form of it is in all the novels I've written, and not always man/woman romance. I think it would more challenging to write a novel with NO love in it, of any type. I'm pretty sure I wouldn't want to read it OR write it.

Back to the powerpoint. And why must I point at these things with such power? I'd much prefer to work with sharingpoint. Much more my style.

What is it with you people? First Vivian and now Wendy. Love, love love. Sheeesh. OK, so be it. Y'all know about me, I said it in the last thread. As for my writing, in APOC, the MC falls in love three times during the book, and has innumerable lust scenes. (I really stopped counting). But then that's him, not me. Well, not totally. Dan has the advantage of being gorgeous, great in bed, and a charmer (whereas I can only lay claim to the last of those, or well, mayber 2 out of three), so he gets to choose which women to fall for. He tends to choose them all, which makes for some of the comic adventure of the book.
A brief snippet illustrates the idea

I bought the bagels and went back up to my apartment. As I got off the elevator, I saw a shapely woman standing in front of my door.
“I am his wife” I heard her say, and then Gabriella turned around and glared at me.
From the other side of the door I heard Fiona say
“I cannot open the door, until he comes back.”
“Its OK, Fiona I’m here.” I called out, and she opened the door.
“Where were you?” Fiona asked me.
“Who is this?” Gabriella asked me. Before I could answer, the elevator returned and Jen stepped out.
“Oh great” she said, seeing Gabriella, and then “Oh shit,” seeing Fiona.

Posting to both threads since I'm unsure where we are. That said, I will ponder Wendy's question and get back to you.

Unsure where we are with both threads up. Hmmm... you maybe reading this twice.

Wandered over to the Borders to check out Judi's spot. Borders is much better for us 'Bats. You enter and immediately hit SciFi/Fantasy, followed by Mystery/Thriller, and then Romance.

So Judi you are going to be 5 aisles straight shot down from the entrance heading to the Seattle Best coffee loitering area. Specific location is approx 5 feet in, second shelf down(4'6") high, and mid shelf. The other end of the aisle is the beginning of the club/lounge chair seating area. Overall looks good. This store is in a newly constructed shopping center, so is getting a lot of additional traffic due to the new premises and stores.

Back to reading Mary Reed McCall's "Templar's Seduction" since DD is hanging with friends and DH is watching GoldenEye for the umpteenth million time this weekend. AND he complains when I watch my LOTR Director's Cut DVDs. Men!

Dale glad the workshop was a success for you.

See ya.

Jamie isn't love, at least on a base level, biochemistry?

There is the whole hormone drive to reproduce. The ferimone scent trail obsorbed by an unsuspecting olfactory gland which then sends signals of attachment to the brain. The resulting warm fuzzies are legendary.

Even in an all male book one is going to find elements of love. Trust, loyalty, brotherhood and the like. I dare say it would be impossible to completely remove attachment from any story. Band of Brothers comes to mind.. not a chic flick by far, but love? Yes sir.

I lost my spell check damnit.. so no gibes about the misspelling. On the other thread Dale is roasting brats over an open flame instead of brauts.. giggle that is much more entertaining than mine.

Sy, your man-whore has an appeal I must say. One wonders how he manages to survive these encounters.

I don't think we are quite done with Judi's thread.. 25 or so more posts to make three hundred. It was so slow I thought we were closer to the end than we were when I posted this.

I like topics about love, Wendy. Of course, I write romantic suspense. My characters are in love and in jeopardy.

Speaking of romance--I was totally thrilled when I picked up the September issue of Romantic Times and Spy Candy was listed in the Publishers Preview column under Kensington! It makes it feel real. Here's what RT said, “It’s fun and games and Spy Candy [R] when Jenna goes to spy camp—then it isn’t in Gina Robinson’s debut.” The "R" in case anyone is wondering is for romantic suspense :-)

Have any of our Wombat RWA members received your September RWR? I have an article in it about the GH. My first byline! A friend of mine from across the country emailed me to tell me she got hers and read the article, but here in Seattle I'm still waiting for mine to come. Maybe tomorrow.

Good to see you back Lisa. I'm glad the trip was all that you hoped, I'm looking forward to some great pics.

The Catalina Paddleboat Classic was this weekend. 32 miles on long board paddling across the great white shark infested waters. It took some contestants over 7.5 hours to complete and they weren't comatosed when they reached the shore.

Am I the only one thinking they're nuts? Impressive but insane. I don't even want to do things I really like for 7.5 hours straight.

Absolutely no writing done today, though I did reread some previous passages and edit the most heinous offenses. I have French doors to refinish and a deck to repaint. Ick! Can I put it off any longer by either reading another book or writing more? Probably.

Meant to address the topic earlier, but got called away mid-post.

My first story has friend love, very little romance. But lots of mentoring relationships--more than I had even planned. But the men would die or kill for one another. Romantic love is key to my second story, but friendship is built first. And for my contemporary romance, lust and attraction come first, followed by love, of course.

Relationships, trust, and love are important to most stories. A man alone may have a dramatic story, but contact between people adds layers and depth and meaning and contrast. I think most men and women would go crazy if they found themselves truly alone. There's so much we take from our contact with other people that without it, we are diminished. Not that we would be nothing. But we would be much less than we were destined to be.

Had some cool ideas for the story that dropped out of nowhere yesterday. And planned on writing tonight. But I got distracted by the movie Tortilla Soup. Anyone seen it? Rather quirky but satisfying. And the food always looks yummy.

We enjoyed much needed rain tonight, but the drive home was tough. A 3-mile stretch where I could see the lane dividers but not the markings on the sides of the road. Was more worried about pulling over, however, since there are a few bridges in the area--didn't want to drive off into a riverbed. But the driving rain lasted only a few minutes. Just disconcerting for a few minutes.

It's that time. See y'all tomorrow.

OK, I think we are actually for real, here now. So good morning on this lovely Monday. I will actually do some work today, although not actually AT work. (Dont ask me to explain, it would take too long).

I think the time has come for me cure my case of Gather schizophrenia. I plan to merge Simon and Sy into one (and only one) united personality. Sort of like an airline merger, except in this case, it isnt to save money but brain cells, which are in just as short supply.
I am not exactly sure how to do this yet, but you might see some odd changes in icons, names etc, and you might even get Friends requests from me.

Good morning. I'll think about your article Wendy and get back to you on it.

Haim, I enjoyed Where Eagles Dare. I agree with you, some sort of romance should be in any sort of literature. It's a basic in life, the degree it's in a book is largely dependent upon the genre you're writing.

Paul, I had no idea it was songs, sheesh.

Dale, sorry to hear that your lovely bike ride was interrupted by a flat. No fun. Try to keep your sanity with work.

Jamie, did you find your experiment for capillaries? Hope you were able to get everything done.

Sy, I'm looking forward to seeing more of this story you're doing. Sounds interesting and fun.

Hey Gina, no I haven't gotten mine yet, I'll have to double check. How cool to read about your own book being highlighted.

Vivian, I confess I watch LOTRs last night--the last part of two and all of three. Sam has some great lines in there. He's just so darn heroic. I love that there isn't a weak character in the whole thing. Actually TNT didn't do a bad job of it.

Beth, that is no fun to drive in. I'm always afraid, as I creep along barely doing 20 so I can actually SEE, that someone will ram into me, but so far it hasn't happened.

How are you doing today Pat? Still doing the chipmunk look or has that all gone down now?

Lisa---Welcome back.

Dana, I don't like gambling, per se, but I do enjoy wandering around Vegas. Would be loads of fun to have a girl's weekend though...

Shout out to Jules. Welcome back to Gather, we've missed your laughter and wit.

Doing the dreaded driveby placeholder. Even a few days off work means stacks of emergencies. Plus, they're in layoff mode again. One gone last Thursday, another goign tomorrow, and then of course, all the remaining consultants on the 5th. It's very depressing.

Sy, Simon, whoever you decide to be, i do hope I get a friend request, and I do hope you let me read APOC. Sounds hilarilous and wonderful!

Dale, bummer on the flat tire, but it sounds like you're doing great with your exercise program.

Gina, wow on the review and double wow on the article! I'll be sure to look for it when I get my copy.

Sia, still a bit swollen, but looking less like a chipmunk. I expect I'll be dealing with ice packs a while longer.

As for everyone else, assume I've said hello. I'll get to the question and everything else when things are less in flames around here.

Good Monday to all! Don't we all love the start of a work week? Have fun today. And stay healthy and well. Judi, hope you're close to 100%.

Gina, sooooooooooooo cool. I wanna read your book now. But I'll wait.

Vivian, I'm smiling as I imagine you visiting bookstores and mentally placing Wombat books on the shelves. Isn't it fantastic that we're gonna be reading all these books in the next few months and years?

Good Monday morning!

I made it back from the East Coast and raring to go. This is the final prep week for the Sausalito Art Festival - and the MAF (the alternative).

Full details at: Sausalito Art Festival Alternative

Spectacular art and music. Should not be missed if you are in the area. Yes, Brenda and Dana, that's aimed at you. There are ferries that go right to the festival. :)

Wow, I missed a mushy and drug-riddled weekend. Stupid camping...

Hubs dragged me up to Michigan to go camping with the in-laws. Don't mind the in-laws, it's the camping that I had to be dragged to. Turned out my fears were well-founded when we woke up yesterday morning on the ground (had fallen asleep on a fully inflated air mattress) and with everything soaked, because apparently our tent was "bleeding" from the deluge overnight. I'm sorry, but 1/2 inch of water in the bottom of a tent is not bleeding...it's f'ing flooding, and it's unacceptable.

Needless to say, hubs owes me a spa day.

Dana, I would also like to be a beta reader! I'm bored out of my mind.

Pat B., I reread those first three chapters, and had hubs read them (hope you don't mind) looking for confusing parts. Figured I might not be able to tell because I know how it ends, but he has a fresh perspective. Neither of us were confused. He actually wants to finish reading the story now. :)

Hope everyone's doing well.

Happy Monday, Everyone! Ugh, I don't know about the rest of you, but I'm really dragging this morning.

Pat--It's not the full review in RT, just a little plug, a coming attraction kind of thing. The full review will be in the November issue. But it's fun, anyway.

John--Glad you got back safely.

Is anyone else having fall weather? It was rainy here yesterday and it's cloudy and cool this morning. I'm not ready to let go of summer yet.

Rachael

I did the camping thing at your age too. And even later. The best thing about camping is how great it feels to sleep in a bed the next night. The good news is you have hubs right where you want him. Bwahahaha.

Dale, this must be catching. I had a bike flat also, in Cental Park riding with my son, and so I walked and he rode to the bike store, got it fixed, and then all was well. Exept for the fact that I was breathing rather hard. I do sometimes forget my age, with all these people telling me how young I look. Dammit.

Rachael. lolol, so you were floating? See, I thought you did the floating part later, on a different sort of inflatable down a river...I mean I could wrong, maybe in Michigan they're doing a pre-float from the tent to the river...lololol! I'm sorry, I shouldn't be LMAO...omg..ahem, no it's not funny when you wake wet and soggy. Day Spa sounds good though. I'm glad you're safe and sound, and dry. Just curious, did Sparky have to dog paddle?

Sy, my mom says so long as you forget your age and just do, you'll stay young. She rides horses, walks and swims, but she does pay for it some with pain--she has arthritis, but she is 71 and young at heart. I tend to be the same way as I detest the whole 'rocking chair' scenario. So I'm glad you're having fun and had a pair of young vigorous legs to dash off to the bike shop.

John glad to see you're back and renewed. That's the nicest part of vacations.

Mike, what are you up to today?

Pat, glad to hear you're not looking much like a chipmunk, but I would hate to be in your bad books today. Look out Diva. Sorry to hear about the layoffs. Just keep retirement in the forefront of your mind, soon...

Gina, the last few days have been upper 80's, which is still cooler than normal with some scattered quick rain here and there. My Walnut trees are doing the yellowing of the leaves. Of course, they are the first to loose their leaves, but I hate seeing it, darn it. I'm not ready for fall and especially not winter.

Good afternoon.

Dale, sounds like you had a great week at the writer's conference. A full week of conference doings and with the family in tow -- very impressive.

My wife and I saw another outdoor concert last night. A friend of ours is in a Seventies cover band and they are fun to watch. One of the many towns next to us featured the band in their gazebo on the green -- a fine place to spend a Sunday evening. Most of the band is my age or so, so it was interesting when they brought a twenty something female singer up to the stage -- it totally changed the whole feeling of the band. Next Saturday we're supposed to be at a party with some of the same people -- my wife and I will likely bring our instruments.

Speaking of which -- it was bizarre to turn on the closing ceremony of the olympics on TV last night and have a young woman belting out Whole Lotta Love, next to this older guy with long white hair and a leprechaun's grin, and oh yeah, a starfire Les Paul guitar. I quickly realized the old guy must be Jimmy Page and summoned my oldest son (a huge Led Zep fan) to watch it with me for a few minutes. Just as the song was ending, David Beckham came out and launched a soccer ball into the ranks of marching girls. A lucky young lady forgot about decorum for the moment and snatched the ball. Seems this whole tableaux was a taste of things to come for the 2012 olympics. Something tells me the Brits might have more of a sense of humor about the events.

Rachael, as the dad of a boy scout, I got to go on lots of camping trips in less than terrific weather (Need I say the dread words winter camping?. As Sy says, the great part is that you get to return to a real bed eventually and gain a real appreciation for just how good that feels.

Gina, very exciting that you are getting some early mentions. I look forward to seeing your book on the shelves at our local bookstores.

Ken, did you make it to the Cape?

Sy, if you can unify the Sy brand, that's prolly a good thing. Being known by two names can get confusing, said one who has been there.

James, can't say I've done winter camping, but I have done late fall and enjoyed it. cool crisp mornings, the smell of woodsmoke and coffee, evenings in jackets and sitting around the fire talking. Some good memories. Haven't been camping in a couple of years.

Thank you for joining our conversation Haim, and welcome.

I was up entirely too late working on a website. Dash it all why can't the time vacum happen when I'm doing something like washing dishes or cleaning house. Wake up and it's all done? fuss and stuff. The website looks good though, so that's something.

I also figured out how it was I was making such a file nightmare with Frontpage.
DH - What did you do? It's saved to the backup hard drive instead of the webfolder.

Me - I don't know. I used control s to save and no where window came up, so I figured it was going where it should.

DH - You weren't paying attention.

Me - I thought I was.

DH drops face into hands making sad, frustrated sounds.

Me - I'm sorry sweetheart.

DH - I know.. grumbling as he shuffles off.
-----------------------------------------------------------
I was at the web publish part of Frontpage and thought I was where I had to publish. Not good to do that. It transfers files all over the place. Won't do that again. grin

Gina so cool on your book plug. I can only imagine how excited you must be! Hoorah! Have you got a website? If so send me the address.

The day calls

Have never done winter camping either but do quite a bit of hiking most winters along the Platte. Can be fun, even when you break through the ice and drop into the river...lol.

Have done winter hunting and been caught out in a surprise ice storm/blizzard where didn't know if would make it back to the farm let alone from there back to town. Can still remember making the slower than comfortable dash back to town in the Camaro and feeling it ride up and over snow drifts on the highway. Couldn't see the road except for the side markers if you drove on the shoulder. Had to keep fingers crossed nobody stopped on the side or on the road in a drift. Was fun...lol.

Sia, it is kinda funny looking at it from a dry and cushy place now. And Sparky did not have to doggy paddle, he instead curled up on top of my head.

Also, we couldn't float, as the air mattress had become a thin layer of plastic on the ground.

He told me that he's going to get all new gear and then we'll try again. I told him it had to be in writing that I was guaranteed not to wake up in water on a deflated air mattress.

As for my bed...I am a creature of comforts...so I have always appreciated my luxury extra firm european pillowtop. ALWAYS. I think I actually prayed to it last night though.

When I was growing up, camping involved staying in grandma and grandpa's motorhome. No bugs, a bathroom, and a kitchen. But it was small, so we were "roughing it".

Rachael with the Cossack fur look...hmmm, takes a bit to get used to, lolol! at least sparky was relatively dry, but the thought of putting on wet, soggy glasses, ewww, ditto for soggy blankets and sleeping bags.

So long as I have something comfortable to lay on I'm fine. Me and the hard ground isn't fun and invariably the sleeping bag area is over a bump or some rocks we forgot to rake or move. Gives new meaning to the princess and the pea. My sister Carolie and I, being the intrepid females, would cut a bunch of pine boughs to put down first, as a kind of nest for our sleeping bags. Surprisingly comfortable. My sibs and I would go floating on the Namakogen in Wisconsin and camp out along the banks, which was loads of fun. Dan is now thinking the only good camping involves a camper. Actually not a bad way to camp, we've done it a few times in the mountains.

Well my DH doesn't camp, for him roughing it is ungrounded outlets and room service that ends at midnight. For me, I don't like bugs. I will sleep up top on a sailboat or maybe beach camp with a fire on the sand in perfect weather. Anything else just ain't gonna happen.

OK- once, ONCE while I was a Girl Scout leader I took the girls camping. All remember is that drinking coffee while standing under the pounding shower is a good thing. The girls weren't the camping sort either so no one missed out.

Now my daughter wants to do the white water rafting with camping. Our friend with the recent loss loves that sort of stuff, maybe?

In answer to Wendy's prompt: Love, it is like a kaleidescope. Never really twice the same, changes, and often filled with wonder. Human interaction is a fascinating field and when writing I try and concentrate on the good. I guess that makes me a closet optimist. I want to believe there is more good than evil. That we are worthy as a species.

For in real life I'm often amazed the the complete lack of thought which guides many peoples' actions. It's like they get three quarters of the way through a concept and then just stop. Frustrates the livin' bejeezus outta me. This is why I'm not allowed to study any higher mathematics OR buy a cabin in Montana.

I find love between friends to be the most compelling story. Like someone mentioned earlier, Sam's friendship for Frodo can actually bring tears to my eyes. I have one that involves to female friends and it drifts across a section of their lives. It is told somewhat flippantly, but the concept of letting go of something that isn't really yours is the ultimate love story. Like Mike said, letting go of something/someone is the ultimate expression of love. That acceptance is truly awe-inspiring and beautiful.

Sorry for the touchy-feely moment, but now I can rest assured that I have met the thread's requirements.

Mike, that's actually one of the tents hubs was looking at to replace said leaky tent.

I guess I shuold have explained that the tent we had was about 20 years old (his parents' old tent) and the air mattress had seen better days. However...I was told that it would be fine...clearly a blantant lie.

Hubs' family are big campers, so he's trying to get me to want to join in (this experience not helping) and is willing to spend lots of money (apparently) to make it happen. He's go a couple of tents in mind, as well as some different sleeping options for us. I get final call, once he narrows it down to things that are good brands/quality/sizes/etc for us.

We shall see, we shall see.

but thanks for the recommendations :)

Love, thou foul tempest hot with fire
You make for lives times most dire
On storm tossed emotions you toss us about
You must think you're some big lout
But if given the option to choose
You we would not lose
Lives you make much richer
Even the poorest ditch digger
Your tempestuous flames keep hearts aflutter
Like we are some deliriously happy nutter

Rachael, thanks for getting back to me. Nice to have the perspective of two readers because I got another rejection from a publisher who thought the plot too convoluted. Sheesh! (I don't mind if your husband reads the whole thing.)

I do believe in love at first sight, but whether it's chemical or two neuroses recognizing each other, I couldn't tell you. I hate romance that pretends to be love at first sight, but is really lust at first sight. And I truly hate the books where the couple hate each other throughout the book, and then we're supposed to believe they really love each other at the end. I know love and hate are closely linked, but some of the things the characters say and do to each other are unforgivable.

And I agree with Haim. Love should be a substory of every novel.

Mike we have a Cabella's very similar to that, and a Coleman mattress. We just haven't used it very much. Two rooms and waterproof. Very nice. Actually I like that little one you showed as it would be easier to tote around and inflate. Love Cabella's stuff.

Rachael, there are some cofy chairs too that can be had that makes the trip so much more comfortable. If you have good stuff it does make a difference.

Vivian, that was me. I think Sam was truly heroic and epitomized what friendship should be. the love between friends is sometimes as strong as or stronger than love between family. It made me cry too. Sam's thought processes as he tried to make sense of chaos/destruction was quite moving and telling. He was a bedrock person.

Mike I adore shopping online too. And I promise not to compromise your good image anymore by making reference to the aforementioned. *smirk

Lovely, police helicopter circling closer than I'd like. Think I'll stay inside for awhile.

Sia- friends are family you pick for yourself. I rarely make that sort of commitment, but when I do it is all in. The pain of Frodo leaving Sam at the end after everything is wrenching. It is like ripping off scabs. I know I shouldn't watch it, but I can't help myself.

Helicopter left- yay! The noise is most unpleasant. BTW... I don't live in gangland, so I can only wonder what their up to.

Working on another passage for Broken Roses, but stuck mid-scene a couple hundred words in playing through various scenarios. I need to dig holes. Be back.

Took me a second to realize Rachael was sounding off to Pat B., whew! I was wondering what Pat could have possibly gotten herself into while laid up with chipmunk cheeks.

Pat B. sorry for the unenlightened response to the ms.

No revelations, but then I was distracted by a rake and some rogue weeds. Bloomin' hot out. What kind of idiot wanders out in the mid-afternoon, mad men and Englishmen. Well since I'm definitely not English... crud! I'm not a male either. Must work on better cliche usage.

Rachael good luck with the negotiations for taking up new "sports". Did he try to make you do this before marriage? Hmmm, I hope he didn't hide this affliction to trick you into marrying him. Could be a deal breaker :-?

Great, the helicopter is back. Nope, gone before I finished typing the sentence. Actually I went to see if there was some live news feed.

Jamie you'll be fine. Remember they don't know anything ;) You can do this. *slides large chocolate bar to quell the doubts

Alright sound off coming up.

So I just finished two romance books and I have a gripe about the same thing with both of them. They both repeated internal conflicts with in the main characters' heads several times. Drove me nuts. By the second time I was like, yeah, yeah... yeah. But the third time it started I was ready spit and skipped a couple of pages just to escape. Yes please go into a three paragraph detail of why they're screwed up, 'cause I didn't bloody well get it the first time. Aargh!

Very annoying. Rant over.

Question- is it ever appropriate to use the omniscient to explain the character? Or is it a psych dump?

I like twists and misdirection Pat B. I want to think I'm on a trail heading the right direction and then WHAM! Get totally sideswiped by a detail that I failed to perceive as important.

I detest the ones that end with things you never could have figured out while reading because there were insufficient clues. It is akin to using time travel to fix flaws in sci-fi novels.

One of things I like best about you Mike, so self-effacing.

Viv, I don't mind them adding details to internal conflicts or situations. Something currently is happening which cause a brief flash to the past is fine, but the same thing, no new info, just in different words? laziness because the character's actions should show you their conflict. If it's been explained then we're going to know that this passage, or action is a result of their insecurities.

Pat B, I like a mystery to be just that. Give me clues sprinkled in so I can figure it out or try to while the story is moving along. If it's too simple, I don't like it. Lots of layering and plausible misdirection, makes it interesting. I admit I'm not a big fan of cozy mysteries. I like mine with some meat to them.

Saying hi. Amazing amounts of personal paperwork/life issues to deal with today. Throw food shopping on top 'cause I've been, ya know, deathly ill for a week. This after 8 loads of laundry over the weekend... You can't even enjoy a good case of pneumonia without coming back to life to find your world totally screwed up. TO add insult to injury, I have to go have a conference with the superintendent of schools about a bone-headed move (and that's being kind...) they've made. Bunches of parents have meetings. I felt like a law student today writing up my argument.

Kid is watching Amityville Horror. Ah, the 70s: really bad hair, really bad clothes, and really bad acting. But this movie scared the you-know-what out of me, especially since my friend and I babysat twin 4 year olds in a creepy old house and the girls looked JUST like Natasha Ryan, the actress who plays Amy the little girl, and there were cats hissing at each other on the stairs, locking us in the upstairs where there'd been a room that a false wall had been discovered in, and the one behind it had blood on it...

creepy.

Oh, what was the subject? Love? Light and sweet? Pardon my diversion. Back on the yellow brick road now...

Judi.. "I'd love to watch the twins. Would you mind if I took them to my house?" grin

Pat you should toss this wonder my way. If I can finish it without figuring it out I'll fly cross country to hug you. smirk. Honestly, there are few authors who can keep me guessing.. guessing in a mystery is a good thing. I'd like to see it.

I've had my fill of relationships today. Stepping down from Mommy status is a lot of work. The family keeps trying to sneak the stool under my feet. Cock brow.. I'm not the mommy anymore, and no one can make me daygumit!

For the weary I made a pot of from scratch beef stew. Be careful the inside of the veggies are very hot. Burned my lips dern it.

I haven't watched that Disney movie in several years, Wendy. Maybe I'll get to borrow my niece Josslynn when she's a bit older and sit and watch some of the Disney collection I own. I was supposed to go to town today, too. never made it. Which means I have to tomorrow whether I want to or not as I have to work Wednesday.

Got an hour work out just before dark. Let my Dane Freckles out, AKA Lady Sia's Harley (and Stryker's mom). Between her and Gidget, pert near wore me out. Gidget and I played 'soccer' with an old half deflated soccer ball which was a hoot. Fast moves and lots of feints. I was laughing so hard I could barely run at times. They're so much fun. Freckles wasn't too sure about that weird blue thing and kept trying to herd me away from it. So it was like a combo of football and soccer. Gidget is fearless and is game for anything that resembles fun and chasing games.

Both are so beautiful when full out running. Ground eating strides, smooth and graceful and turn on a dime. To give you an idea of how fast they can be and the ground they can cover in an easy lope, I measured the strides--out of curiosity--6-10 feet in a bound and they weren't running full out.

I have to be careful because they can knock me down if I'm not watching. Between the two we have about 270lbs of muscle dancing and turning. Gidget can leap up 6 feet easily with a running start. I hold up a ball or a pull toy over my head and she can jump and get it. Impressive.

Jax my cocker about got her butt handed to her. I went over to fill her water dish and of course Freckles and Gidget followed. Jax and Gidget are pals but Jax was aggressive to Freckles. Partially over her perceived territory, and partially due to the fact she considers me to be hers. To the point that if I hadn't been closer, Freckles could have hurt her if Jax had persisted. Freckles is very laid back and gentle, but she gave a warning growl, which of course my barely 40 lb Cocker ignored and let me tell you, when a Dane growls a serious warning? The hair comes up on your neck. Sounds scary. Except to Jax. She 's like, bring it on your speckled witch. Did I mention that Jax THINKS she a Great Dane?

Pat, I'm sorry you're still feeling pain. Of course, the first day back is going to be hard and whatever possessed you not to take your motrin or advil or something? Remember it for tomorrow.

Jill you are welcome to drop in and feed my obsession with cheap online sites. Evil woman you..snicker.

Jamie, honey what kind of shoes are you wearing that your feet hurt you so? You really should give Brenda back her red stilletos.. the classroom is no place for them.

Sia I can imagine your fearless Jax seeing herself as alpha. One of the neighbor's dogs decided it would be a good idea to block my girls and I on the trail behind the house. My girls were good about staying at my side until the other dog growled. Blank stare

I had a three way dog fight. Mine are collectively about 220 lbs. The neighbor's gorgeous liver husky.. oh maybe 75. I got Macy right off and she disengaged. The husky submited by the time I got to Brooke. She was full of herself for the rest of the walk. It was all over in a minute. My neck isn't happy with the odd angles it got pulled at as I reached for big dogs.

It's beginning to sound as if we need a 1960's bowl party. Everyone dump their painkillers in the bowl and pass it around. Nah, invading Pat's hottub sounds much better. I've got the lime wedges!

I'm up later than normal. Would have been asleep but I had 4 deer decide to come into the front yard to feast on the acorns and fruit I throw out there. I have a huge Oak that's at least 4 plus feet around. Old tree, old soul. Jax, my darling yipping brat went nuts over the deer in the front yard. lol! I have a big picture window with a window seat. Window takes up 3/4's of the wall on that side. Wonderful view. Jax likes to lay up there and watch the birds and whatever.

Well, I'm heading off to bed. I'll catch y'all later.

I think I may move to SF in a year or so. If I can figure out how I'm going to earn money.

I seem to be late to the party tonight, and some folks have already packed it in.

John, glad you enjoyed your holiday. And is your upcoming event the one where you serve beer for hours on end? Has that been a year already?

Wendy, are you sure you don't wanna change your mind about camping with your honey? If he wants you to go--and it sounds as if he really wants you to go--you'd get a whole lot of points in your favor if you went. You never know what a camping weekend would be ultimately worth. Just saying...

Hello to everyone else.
